Netflix at Work on Magic: The Gathering Series

Netflix Gathers the Magic Russo Brothers

Are you one of the many millions upon millions of people that love to play Magic: The Gathering? If you are then you’re in luck, or not—depends how you look at this—but Netflix is working on an animated series based on the popular card game. Not impressed? What if I say they got the directors from Avengers: Endgame to produce it? Oh, still not hyped. Okay. How ’bout that the animated series will also have the story artist from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse working as the supervising director and producer?

There we go. Got your interest now?

Thanks to some news over at Polygon (geez, they’re killing it right now, so give them some love, especially Matt Patches) Netflix stated they’d be working with the Russos and Hasbro to bring the show to life. Netflix announced in a press release that “The Russos will oversee the creation of an all new storyline and expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are Magic’s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains as they contend with stakes larger than any one world can hold.”

Honestly, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a better team put together for an animated series. I mean, here, I’ll show you (again, thanks to Polygon for the great deep dive on all of this):

Henry Gilroy (Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Jose Molina (The Tick, Jordan Peele’s Weird City) serving as showrunners. Yoriaki Mochizuki (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) is on board as supervising director and co-executive producer.

Bardel Entertainment (Rick and Morty, Teen Titans Go!, and Netflix’s The Dragon Prince) is set to run point on the show’s animation. Octopie Network (Neo Fighter Dream Crisis) will oversee production on the series, with Todd Makurath (How to Be a Serial Killer) Eric Calderon (Afro Samurai), and Dave Newberg (Brad Neely’s Harg Nallin’ Sclopio Peepio) serving as producers, and Mike Larocca (Deadly Class) and Octopie CEO Isaac Krauss serving as executive producers.
