Netflix announced via a Facebook post yesterday that their original sci-fi thriller, The OA is returning for a second season. The series was a late in the year hit for Netflix in 2016. Check out the announcement video below:
The OA’s Story Continues
The OA popped onto Netflix in mid-December of 2016. The show hit at the perfect time for folks to binge during the holiday season. As such, the show found a loyal fanbase rather quickly. So it comes as no surprise that the supernatural thriller is returning to Netflix for a second season. One curious detail is that it appears Netflix is referring to the second season as The OA Part II. This change is consistent with the recent trailer for Stranger Things season two. During that show’s Super Bowl teaser, the title was revealed as Stranger Things 2. However, no details are available about whether or not this is an across the board move for Netflix, or is being reserved for their more cinematic series.
The end of The OA’s first season was divisive, to say the least. However, the promise of a second season should be welcome news to fans of the show. The first season’s finale left some fans with a sense of betrayal while others are having fun speculating about the validity of The OA’s story. Hopefully, a second season begins to clear some of that smoke. Series co-creator and star, Brit Marling, is no stranger to heady science fiction. She penned the overlooked and underseen 2011 film Another Earth. So it’s safe to say the show is in good hands. Long form sci-fi television is hard to pull off and fans of shows like LOST know unnecessary story elements can bog down these shows. But, Netflix has a history of delivering satisfying and well-crafted television.
