34 years after the first film, new details have been released about the second Blade Runner film. According to Nerdist, the upcoming sequel film will be titled Blade Runner 2049.
Blade Runner 2049
Blade Runner 2049 will take place thirty years after the original Blade Runner film. Since the first Blade Runner film was originally released in theaters in the year 1982, this timeline is similar to the timeline as it has occured in real life. Although we don’t yet have replicants in the year 2016, the second film will take place after a similar timespan has occured between the fictional events of the film and the time in real life. Not much is currently known about the sequel, besides some casting information. The first film was based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. Dick. That novel didn’t have a sequel, so the filmmakers of the film’s sequel will probably exclusively use the film’s universe to expand the story into the sequel. Therefore, Blade Runner 2049 will likely have many interesting surprises and twists for the fans of the franchise.
Blade Runner 2049 will star Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Big Short). In addition, Harrison Ford (the Star Wars franchise, the Indiana Jones franchise) will reprise his role as investigator Rick Deckard from the first film in some capacity. The upcoming film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve and was written by Michael Green (American Gods) as well as original Blade Runner screenwriter Hampton Fancher. Ridley Scott, who directed the first film, will serve as a producer on the sequel film. Blade Runner 2049 is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on October 6, 2017, about two years before the action of the original takes place.
Word of the Nerd will report more on this story as it develops.
