Bloody New Hellboy Trailer

The reboot of Hellboy starring Stranger Things star David Harbour as everyone’s favorite big red demon has launched its second look at the film. Being a “Red Band” trailer, it is definitely NSFW. We get a little more detail to the story and plot of this new incarnation of Hellboy. It also features a lot more gore and a lot of cursing (“.22 automatic on my person” #beastieboys). So check out the trailer below and we can discuss what we think!

Rated “R” Superstar

Comicbook.com has a few insights from Harbour on this new bloodier look on Hellboy. “There’s really a sense that you’re actually killing things, even if they are giants or monsters,” Harbour previously told Empire. “You’re chopping their heads off, you’re bathing in their blood and you’re feeling the complex feelings of actually cutting the heart out of another thing. We’re taking the time to deal with the fact that Hellboy is a killer. He’s a weapon.”

Me, personally, I have mixed reactions on this reboot of Hellboy. First, neither this trailer nor the first trailer has really excited me about this movie. It comes out April 12th and I am not 100% sure if I will go see it. I read a lot of Hellboy, but also, movies are expensive. With Captain Marvel coming out next week and Avengers: Endgame at the end of April it looks like those are winning out for my cash. The trailers feel like the movie is trying to hard to sell that it’s bloody and action-packed yet still funny.

I also never really felt Hellboy was that “gory” of a comic. Sure, it had lots of violence and blood, but Mignola’s art style never really felt overtly gore-centric either. I always pictured Hellboy as almost a dark comedy, but from the trailer, it just feels like the tone is all over the place.

The Good Things

I am probably being way too harsh. But there are some things I liked from the trailer. All the monsters and different creatures look fantastic. We are diving into some different Hellboy stories that Del Toro’s two films didn’t touch on. It will be nice to see those things brought to life on the big screen. The action also looks like it will be very fun. From the editing of the trailer, at least Hellboy and the other characters look very cool fighting all of these wonderful creatures throughout.

Conclusion

I hate to be too “judgey” on a two-minute clip, but then again, that’s what trailers are for. To get us excited and want to go see the film. And for me, this new Hellboy is just not doing it for me. I mean, yeah, I am eventually going to watch it and then make my official opinion from that, but just on this trailer, I am not too hyped. I love Hellboy comics (you can check out this article I wrote about some of my favorites), so I want it to be good and hope it turns out better than I think. What are your thoughts on this new trailer? Are you liking this “new” Hellboy? Let us know in the comments.
