New Star Wars Animated Series Announced

Star Wars Resistance Announced for the Fall

Star Wars Rebels ended earlier this year, much to the sadness of fans. But, the team at Lucasfilm already had a plan in motion. On Thursday, Lucasfilm announced a new anime-influenced series. Prepare to return to that galaxy far, far away in Star Wars Resistance. Dave Filoni, who was the showrunner for Clone Wars and Rebels, returns to run the new series.

Dave FiloniIn a statement to Star Wars’ site, Filoni said “the idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots. My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”

New Characters, Old Favorites

According to the press release, the new series is about “Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot recruited by the Resistance and tasked with a top-secret mission to spy on the growing threat of the First Order.” This also marks the first Star Wars animated series which will take place in the sequel trilogy era. Coming along for the ride are two favorites from the new films. Oscar Isaacs will be back as dashing pilot and Resistance leader Poe Dameron. BB-8, everyone’s favorite new droid, will also be appearing. Gwendoline Christie also returns as Captain Phasma, who serves the First Order. Given the events of The Last Jedi, this takes place before The Force Awakens

In a statement to, Programming and General Manager Marc Buhaj, senior vice president at Disney XD, said, “our colleagues at Lucasfilm have created a compelling narrative for an untold moment in the Star Wars galaxy, and we are excited to partner with them again on this new original series. Star Wars Resistance will bring viewers across generations an engaging story with heart, humor and both new and familiar characters.”

Expect this new series to fly in from that galaxy far, far away this fall on Disney XD. For more television news, click here.
