Tom Hardy’s Antihero Takes Center Stage
Entertainment Weekly released the best look yet at Venom. The upcoming superhero film stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, the unfortunate soul possessed by an alien life form bent on destruction. Venom hits theaters this October.
Eddie Brock Becomes Venom
A few months back we got our first look at Venom. The anti-superhero picture stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland). The first trailer portrays Eddie Brock’s mental illness as a way for the symbiote to enter his body. Furthermore, the symbiote is a metaphor for his struggles with whatever mental illness he has. It’s a good hook for an antihero story, and Hardy’s a committed performer. However, audiences were furious over not getting a proper look at the titular character. What was probably an attempted moment of restraint played like a cop-out and left fans demanding a look at Venom.
The second trailer debuted at CinemaCon in Las Vegas and featured our first real glimpse at the character. And it was. . . okay. The character reveal seemed tacked on and goofy. Besides, it is dark, early CGI, and passed through tons of vocal filters. Once the dust settled, the second Venom trailer didn’t leave much of an impression.
But, ahead of 2018 Comic-Con, Entertainment Weekly published a new image of the symbiotic creature, and it delivers a clear look at the character. Check it out below!
That looks like Venom! Honestly, there isn’t much to say about the image. The picture is very close. Certainly, it provides a good look at the symbiote’s ugly mug, and it’s incredibly faithful, but that’s about it. Although, given the character’s previous big screen treatment, maybe that’s enough. Whatever experiment Sony is pulling with Spider-Man’s beloved characters is coming to a head. This year will prove if it’s a viable strategy or not. What do you think about Venom?
