Dancing with the Devil in the Pale Moon Light
No, this isn’t a late attempt at an April Fool’s Day prank; Fox has officially released the latest promo video for Gotham, depicting Cameron Monaghan as The Joker. It’s the moment viewers have been clamoring for since Monaghan first appeared as Jerome Valeska way back in season one. Now, as the genre-defining saga comes to a close after its fifth and final season, it would appear as though fans are finally getting their wish.
“You wanna know how I got these scars…?”
The title of the teaser is “Meet Mr. J” and in it appears a not-so-distant Gotham City. Soaring above the skyline is an impressive-looking Wayne Tower, which quickly cuts to a nice crane-shot of Arkham Asylum. The song “I Feel Pretty” from Westside Story plays in the background, juxtaposing eerily with the scenery. Inside Arkham, a catatonic “Mr. J” sits drooling in a chair. There’s a sudden flash forward (or is it backward?) and there he stands, in all his glory: the perfect balance of Nicholson and Ledger, with an innate quality that’s all his own. The trailer ends with The Joker (Monaghan) running atop a catwalk, stopping suddenly to remove something that’s become stuck in his hand—a Batarang. Could it be that we’re actually going to see Batman and The Joker square off?!
“See, there were these two guys in a lunatic asylum…”
It’s been a constant debate of “will they/won’t they?” for years regarding Monaghan as the Joker. In a recent interview with EW, the talented young star revealed, while reflecting on his favorite roles and incarnations of the Joker portrayed throughout the series,
“The character I most enjoyed playing is the one in the final episode that we haven’t seen yet… when you have an episode that’s a full-on Batman episode running around in the future, you’re going to have characters that you’ll expect to see.”
With only two episodes of Gotham remaining, be sure to watch and bear witness to what promises to be the best Joker incarnation we’re sure to see since Heath Ledger; maybe even better. Check out this creepy picture of Monaghan as “full-Joker” below.
