A House-Built Foundation
Olivia Wilde’s acting talents have taken her from television to theatre and film. Her role as Doctor Remy Hadley on House gave her wide recognition as a household star. From as early as 2011, Wilde got involved in directorial duties with her initial debut film, Free Hugs, which was a prominent feature in part of Glamour Magazine’s short film series. The short garnered Wilde notoriety and notice within the festival circuit.
The First Feature
Olivia Wilde enjoyed great success in acting. However, she has enjoyed fresh acclaim this year due to her feature film debut. Booksmart released as an R-rated comedy and boasts positive reviews from many critics online. It’s touted as one of the funniest films of the year, and Wilde is riding a high with this new wave.
The warm reception of Booksmart brings up the question of what will be the next endeavour for Wilde going forward.
Given the landscape of cinema in 2019, Marvel Studios are on the mind of many consumers. Wilde was asked to comment if she would ever be interested in directing for them. In an interview with MTV International, she had this to say:
“Totally yeah, absolutely. I think that it’s exciting that now women like Ava DuVernay and Chloé Zhao are directing Marvel films and it’s exciting to think about what that will do to the franchise. I think it’s a proud…I’m a proud member of the movement of female directors, and I don’t think there’s any genre that should be off the table.”
A Wilde Declaration
Judging from the interview, Olivia Wilde shows eagerness and an open mind to take on the challenge.
Rumours circulated once that Wilde was to fill the role of Captain Marvel. While speculative, it’s possible to say that she already has a strong connection with Marvel Studios. With the notoriety of her recent hit, Booksmart, many options are certainly available to her.
As mentioned above, Chloé Zhao, Cate Shortland, and Anna Boden are part of the ongoing process of Marvel Studios to progress the ideology of more female directors in Hollywood. With the films The Eternals, Black Widow, and the recently-released Captain Marvel, the future certainly looks promising.
Hopefully, we will see Olivia Wilde added into this fold soon.
For now, Booksmart (2019) is playing in theatres worldwide.
