Until recently, the fate of Pacific Rim 2 was unknown, but now, the sequel appears to be moving full-steam ahead. Deadline reports that Star Wars: The Force Awakens’s John Boyega has secured the lead role.
John Boyega Added to Pacific Rim 2 Cast
As Finn in The Force Awakens, John Boyega was catapulted into the spotlight, and now, the British 24-year-old has added a second franchise to his belt. The news should come as a soothing balm for those who thought Boyega was joining the cast of Marvel’s Black Panther, only to be told those rumors were not in any way true.
Producer Mary Parent said of Boyega’s casting in Pacific Rim 2, “It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men.”
Boyega’s Pacific Rim: Maelstrom character is the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), who sacrificed himself at the end of Pacific Rim in order to stop the Kaiju from infiltrating Earth. Additional details on the movie and its plot are being kept tightly under wraps.
Producer Guillermo del Toro commented on Boyega’s casting, saying, “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
Who is Joining Boyega in Pacific Rim 2?
Talking about Pacific Rim: Maelstrom last year, del Toro indicated that everyone who didn’t die in the original movie would be back for the sequel, but now that Pacific Rim 2 has a new screenwriter, it’s unclear if that’s still the case. Writer Derek Connolly may, however, be working from del Toro’s drafts, which would mean most of what del Toro has said about the Pacific Rim sequel is still going to happen, including the movie being set in the future where Jaegers are now commonplace.
Last year, star Charlie Hunnam was still interested in returning for a sequel, but with actors’ schedules ever-changing and the fact that Pacific Rim: Maelstrom isn’t supposed to go into production until the end of this year, that could change. Most media outlets are reporting John Boyega will have the lead role, so that also leaves Hunnam’s involvement in doubt.
With del Toro no longer returning as writer or director, Pacific Rim 2 should keep some of the characters the same in order to draw in the original movie’s fan base. With any luck, when the sequel finally hits theaters, we’ll see John Boyega’s character saving the world alongside Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori.
