Politician Banned from EVE Online for Accusations

A Politician Walks Into a Space Bar…

I want to start this off by saying I have no idea what EVE Online is, other than it’s a game. I definitely don’t know anything about Brian Schoeneman. So let’s just warp right into it and learn what’s going on together! First things first: what is EVE Online?

According to the EVE Online homepage, “EVE Online is a community-driven spaceship MMO where players can play for free, choosing their own path from countless options. Experience space exploration, immense PvP and PvE battles, mining, industry and a thriving player economy in an ever-expanding sandbox.”

Okay, sounds awesome. I’m downloading that tonight. But on with the story, and who is Brian Schoeneman? According to Shcoeneman’s LinkedIn he’s “the political and legislative director for the Seafarers International Union of North America, the nation’s largest maritime labor union.” In the world of EVE Online, Shcoeneman was an elected member of the Council of Stellar Management (CSM).

Is it weird that a politician didn’t have enough of being a politician in real life? He decided to be a politician in his hobby too!

So you’re probably wondering what a politician did to get banned from a video game. If you guessed he used his elected power to try and influence the game by breaking legal agreements then you’d be right. If you guessed he overthrew the in-game government and became a galactic dictator then you’d be wrong… That will be me in about 5 months when I become known in EVE Online as Lord Drol. If you realized Drol is just Lord backwards then you will be the first to taste my galactic power!

For real, though. Shcoeneman had potentially broken a real non-disclosure agreement (NDA). If you’ve never had to sign an NDA, just a fun fact, disclosing information after signing that is a big NO-NO. According to Variety, Shcoeneman was permanently banned by the developers of the game, CCP Games, for disclosing confidential information to in-game friends to help benefit with illicit transactions in-game. To be clear, Shcoeneman has denied the allegations and intends to pursue legal actions to clear his name.

This might be my favorite news story I’ve covered so far! I just want to leave it on that and let y’all enjoy this campaign video for good ol’ Schoeneman or “Brisc Rubal” as he was known across the galaxy!

Sound Off

Seriously, let me know what you think in the comments down below. Also, would you like to join Lord Drol’s empire? I’ll be taking applications starting today. Remember the Word of the Nerd is online…if you haven’t realized how meta that is, then now you do. Have a good one!
