This article contains spoilers for the episode of The Flash that aired last Tuesday, October 27th.
According to The Wrap, Andrew Kreisberg has confirmed that the child that Iris’ mother Francine (Vanessa Williams) had without her ex-husband Joe’s (Jesse L. Williams) knowledge is comic book character Wally West, and that he’s Joe’s biological son (and therefore Iris’ brother). Andrew Kreiberg said: “We always hate it on TV shows when it’s like Year 2 and someone’s like, ‘Cousin John’s coming!’ and ‘Oh, good old cousin John,’ like no one ever mentioned him before? It was weird. The notion that they don’t know Wally, that’s sort of where that came from. Then the idea that Francine was alive, and that’s where that story came together.”
In the comics, Wally West is not Iris West’s brother. Instead, Wally was Iris’ nephew and the first Kid Flash (and took up Barry’s Flash mantle at an even later point). Does this mean that the Wally on The Flash (to be played by Keiynan Lonsdale) will be a speedster? Only time will tell.
The revelation Tuesday night also means that at least part of Iris West’s season two arc will be paralleling Barry’s season one arc: she has a secret that she just can’t spit out. Kreisberg said: “Iris is now in the position that Barry was in last year. She’s keeping a secret to protect somebody and she’s going to find that — for all her anger at Barry and Joe from last year — keeping this secret is not going to be so easy. It’s going to be weighing on her before she finally decides to take some action in an upcoming episode.” It’s arguable that Iris has a better reason to keep this secret (she doesn’t know how her dad’s going to react to having a biological son) and that she has an easier job in keeping her secret (I don’t think it’s common for dudes to randomly guess that their ex-wife hid a kid from them).
No matter what, I hope that keeping the secret doesn’t become as big of a thing as it was last season. We certainly don’t need that again.
The Flash airs Tuesday nights at 8pm on the CW.
