Red Hood Gets His Hoodie
Jason Todd has had a very long history. Once the Robin infamously killed off (by phone poll), he was later resurrected and became Gotham’s most violent antihero. As the Red Hood, he has been both foe and ally to his one-time mentor, Batman. He has led the Outlaws, a rotating cast of characters, often doing what the bigger heroes won’t. His trademark look of leather jacket, body armor, and red helmet has already made him an icon.
All of that is about to change.
In the most recent edition of the free magazine, DC Nation, artist Pete Woods debuted a new look for the Red Hood. Woods will be also taking over art chores from Dexter Soy on the title Red Hood and the Outlaws.
All of this comes on the heels of issue 24 and upcoming 25 of the comic, where Jason has shot the Penguin and inadvertently unmasked himself. With the entire Bat-family out to get him (and his base about to drop from the sky, long story), it is clear that Jason will need a new look to separate himself from his former allies.
New Look for the Bat-Family’s Rebel
The new look retains the body armor but ditches the leather jacket for a jacket with an actual red hood. The helmet has also been ditched and replaced with a half mask/rebreather to cover the lower half of Jason’s face and a domino mask. The domino mask in question, with its red lenses, is reminiscent of the mask used by Dick Grayson in the New 52 run of Nightwing. Jason’s guns have also been replaced with a katana and a crowbar. Perhaps this is the same crowbar that once ended his life? Writer Scott Lobdell is planning to make Red Hood an even more brutal street vigilante than before. This may include an up-close and personal dishing-out of justice.
Fans are divided on the new costume, with many preferring his now-classic look. Others have compared it to Casey Jones of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It is a radical departure from his previous look, but with his being on the outs with Batman, it might make sense. This includes the new logo on the suit, which has dropped the Bat motif entirely.
Red Hood and the Outlaws #25 will be released on August 8th.
