Review – Dark Matter S03E11: The Dwarf Star Conspiracy

Last week on Dark Matter, Two (Melissa O’Neil) and the Android (Zoie Palmer) met their creator (also played by Zoie Palmer). The crew of the Raza helped other sentient androids through a tough situation and gave Android a couple of her lost memories, including one that reveals that the crew of the Raza was planning to stop an invasion before they lost their memories. Sarah (Nathalie Brown) received a new android body to replace the human body she lost in Season One, but Sarah left with Android’s android friends. Significantly, we learned that not all androids like Android are as benevolent as she is.

This Week on Dark Matter

This week on Dark Matter, the crew of the Raza discovers what the titular Dwarf Star Conspiracy is, despite Three’s (Anthony Lemke) misgivings about investigating the issue.

I liked this episode, but for a lot of reasons that I can’t really elaborate on. This episode takes steps to open up the world of Dark Matter like it hasn’t done previously, and spoiling the surprise may actually ruin part of the viewing experience. Something I didn’t like in this episode was a conversation a certain character had about their outfit. There are certain jokes I think male writers cannot do well, and while it seems like the Internet found this comedic interlude funny, I was turned off a little.

There were a couple of standout performances in this episode. Anthony Lemke shows a side of Three that I don’t think we’ve seen before. In addition, Kate Drummond’s guest appearance in this episode was reminiscent of her recent guest stint on fellow Syfy Friday night show Wynonna Earp, but also very different in a cool way. One wonders if Drummond will go for the Syfy Friday hat trick. Melissa O’Neil as Two also had a good and important performance central to this episode, where she tried to express concern regarding the Dwarf Star conspiracy while trying not to let the others poking around the conspiracy discover her own connection to Dwarf Star and the conspicuously absent Alexander Rook (Wil Wheaton). These three performances helped ground the reveals of this episode and make them believable within Dark Matter‘s universe.

I can say without spoiling the episode for you is that Dark Matter is clearly hurtling towards its season finale. Way back in episode four of this season, the Android was briefly witnessed to several future events, and given cryptic hints to the future by future!Five. After Boone shooting Android in episode 5 and meeting Android’s creator last episode, this episode heralds the reveal of a third future hint (this is NOT a spoiler: the episode’s title is said to hint verbatim). This reveal is the biggest yet, and will almost certainly affect the show until it ends (hopefully not with this season finale, although this show has not yet been renewed). As a show that keeps trying to widen the horizon of its world, Dark Matter is a show that is just getting better with age.

Next week on Dark Matter, the crew of the Raza returns to Zairon to face off with their former comrade Ryo Ishida (Alex Mallari Jr.)…

Dark Matter airs on Friday nights at 9pm on Syfy.
