Review – Goosebumps: Download and Die #2 (IDW Publishing)

Too Much Screen Time Can Be Deadly in Goosebumps: Download and Die #2

Mitra’s new phone is starting to cause all sorts of problems. Yeah, it is top of the line tech wise, but it might be taking over her life. The last issue ended with Mitra having a slumber party with her best friend Kyra and new friend Flips.  It seems Flips did not have a good night as she wakes up to her hair being cut and scratches on her face! There is also a note about someone or something wanting Mitra’s phone. Her friends want her to get rid of the mysterious phone, but Mitra believes them to be jealous and, besides, what is the worse that could happen? Find out in Goosebumps: Download and Die #2.

Goosebumps Download And Die! #2 – Cover Art by Michelle Wong

Much like the previous Goosebumps comic, the story picked up fantastically in issue #2.  Jen Vaughn does a great job of starting to twist the story into a very horror-filled direction. A very kid friendly horror, but horror none the less. I love how the phone is slowly seeping into Mitra’s mind and making her question her friends and everyone around her. Vaughn is building up a good mystery as well in Goosebumps: Download and Die #2. Who wants the phone and why? There are also some new mysterious appearances in this issue that amp up the mysterious nature of the story.

Vaughn makes this issue a lot of fun to read. She nails the character voice of Mitra and makes the reader latch onto her and her plight. She is dealing with things that everybody goes through with friends and crushes. Well, with an added Goosebumps twist to it.

Michelle Wong continues to do some good cartooning in Goosebumps: Download and Die #2. It is a good cartooning style, which fits well with the series and tone of the story. The images still feel a little stagnant and motionless at times. The background details continue to be delightful and make the world feel alive and lived in. The facial expressions continue to be fantastic as well; Wong does a great job of showing what the characters are feeling on the pages. The “ghost” like figures are also very well done.

Farrell’s colors continue to be superbly well down in Goosebumps: Download and Die #2. She continues to use the pink color exceptionally well and it looks creepy on the pages. I love the paranormal green used in this issue as well, it has a great contrast to the pink color used throughout.

Goosebumps: Download and Die has picked up steam with issue #2. Mitra’s new mysterious phone is starting to take her over and bad things begin to happen. Will she get rid of her phone to save her friendship, or is it the only friend she needs now? This issue ramps up the spooky/creepy side of the story and has me very interested how the story is going to end. With one more issue to go, Mitra is in big trouble and, as we know in the Goosebumps world, we don’t always get a happy ending!
