A Kingdom Under Siege in Grass Kings #14
The Federal Government has begun their attack on the Grass Kingdom (in the previous issue). Going on Sheriff Humbert’s evidence they have come to take Archie into custody and take down the Grass Kingdom. Bullets are flying and both sides will see losses. Robert knows Archie is innocent but he is going to have to figure out a way to negotiate or it will be the end of the Kingdom forever. Meanwhile, Bruce continues his investigation into the “Thin Air Killer” in Carghill and he comes upon evidence in Grass Kings #14 that may finally lead to the killer’s identity!
Matt Kindt continues to weave a masterful crime/family drama story in Grass Kings #14. This series continues to keep me on the edge of my seat. Kindt has done a fantastic job of slowly developing this story for the past fourteen issues. Whether it is delving into the three brothers’ relationship or the past lives of residents of the Grass Kingdom, Kindt plants little seeds that keep the reader invested in this story and what is happening. He continues to water and feed those seeds until they blossom into something spectacular in Grass Kings #14.
Kindt cranks up the drama in Grass Kings #14 as several developments are revealed throughout the issue. There is a lot happening with the Feds coming after Archie, Robert defending the Kingdom and Bruce discovering new evidence about the “Thin Air Killer.” Kindt holds the attention of the reader superbly well going back and forth between these plot points and putting them together in fantastic fashion.
Tyler and Hilary Jenkins continue to do some beautiful artwork in Grass Kings #14. The layout of this series continues to be very impressive. The structure helps the story flow tremendously well and builds up the tension throughout the pages. I am also still amazed at how much detail Tyler gets out of his style; his ink lines are very loose and it looks almost “hectic” at first glance, but when you start reading the story the details come in superbly well and he gets great emotions out of his characters. Hilary continues to do some delightful coloring work. This watercolor style elevates this story to give an almost supernatural feel to this very real crime/drama story.
There are some superb pages at the end of Grass Kings #14 that are great pieces of work. I cannot give much detail because it would reveal some major spoilers for this issue. Tyler’s loose style and the use of red throughout those pages are wonderfully done.
Grass Kings surprises me with each and every issue on how much I have grown to love it. The story is fully engrossing and the mystery has dug deep into my psyche. Grass Kings #14 is the penultimate issue with only one more issue to go before the series conclusion! Everything is set up in this issue for the big finale and I honestly do not know what is going to happen and it has me very excited!
