Norgal is back to his adventuring ways but it is not long until trouble finds him again!
“A Knights Tale” Head Lopper #9
After defeating Berserkr and Ulrich “The Twice-Damned” in Head Lopper Vol. 2: And the Crimson Tower (Check out the reviews here) Norgal has set off once again on his own. Well, not totally alone; Agatha the wisecracking witch’s head is still with him as well. In Head Lopper #9: And the Knights of Venoriah Vol. 3 (1 of 4) our favorite melon-cutter warrior is off adventuring in new lands. He is fighting all kinds of beasts, trolls, and goblins throughout the lands. It is not long until a new adventure and quest finds him. But will even the mighty Head Lopper be able to survive this new and formidable foe?
After the wonderful Vol. 2 of Head Lopper, Andrew MacLean comes back with another quarterly installment of action and adventure with Head Lopper #9. It seems with every installment MacLean brings a new tone and feel to the Head Lopper adventure. He elaborated on this a little in the interview I had with him. He talks about how Vol. 2 was influenced by Zelda and having to go and collect different items to bring back to the main “dungeon” before moving on. Head Lopper #9, which starts off Vol. 3, has its own unique feel and tone to it, while still having a familiar feel with Norgal and Agatha. Head Lopper #9 feels completely different storywise, but the core concept of action and adventure remains intact. It seems Norgal will have to deal with some more “political” things in this volume and we learn some backstory on how he and Agatha “met.”
Andrew MacLean also continues to introduce a great supporting cast of characters in Head Lopper #9. We basically get a whole new set of characters to explore with this volume, with new motivations and backgrounds. We also get some great new monsters and creatures to see Norgal battle, and that is always one of my favorite things to see in every Head Lopper issue.
The only problem is with some dialogue. When the characters shout curse words it seems weird and out of place. I guess because the series has that centuries-old feel how the characters generally talk, the curse words feel out of place for the story.
Andrew MacLean’s art style continues to be wonderfully showcased in Head Lopper #9. He has that style that I like to call “simple yet complicated.” When you first look at his art it looks rather straightforward and uncomplicated. That is until you really look at his layouts and designs and see how involved and intricate everything on the page is. I put Andrew MacLean in the same artist as David Aja, Mike Mignola and others that boil down their images to the core of what they are and then expand upon them.
MacLean once again shows off his delightful imagination in Head Lopper #9. He has some truly great character designs throughout this issue. I will not spoil anything, but this new cast of characters look great. From the armor and clothing, they are visually delightful. He also has some fantastic creature designs that, again, are always one of my favorite things.
Jordie Bellaire once again joins Andrew MacLean for Head Lopper #9. She brings a wealth of talent with her coloring abilities. She seems to use a lot of yellows and blues throughout this issue, which gives the start a little lighter tone to it. I love her use of red in certain scenes in Head Lopper #9 as well; it really brings out a foreboding tone in those scenes.
Head Lopper #9: And the Knights of Venoriah Vol. 3 (1 of 4) starts off another head-lopping adventure you are not going to want to miss out on! Andrew MacLean brings Norgal and Agatha back for another exciting adventure. With 56 pages of action, adventure, drama, it is well worth $4.99.
