Review – I Am Hexed #1 by Kirsten Thompson

I Am Hexed
I Am Hexed #1

Book Title: I Am Hexed #1

Book Description: I Am Hexed is a supernatural political thriller. There’s magic, mystery, personal drama and an accidental carnivorous plant. Witches have been a part of the political fabric of Washington D.C. since it was founded. It’s only since the 1960s that witches stood together and fought to take back the word “Hexed”. A movement was ignited when witches came out of the shadows and proudly showed off their broomsticks. Now with the struggle for equality ongoing, Charlotte Helm, a junior staff member for Senator Royce, has been thrust into the murky and dangerous waters of political games between witches and their adversaries. Charlotte is now D.C.’s Most Wanted Witch on the run. With her boss under suspicion for political corruption, Charlotte, her ex-girlfriend and whatever other help she can find, scramble to keep one step ahead of the political and magical forces hunting her.

Kirsten Thompson carries her powerful message in some really great characters. Charlotte is relatable, as she is thrust into a dangerous political game. The story plays out on a powerful stage with a cast of diverse characters. The only criticism that I have is that there was a huge amount of development in the characters and that a lot of Charlotte’s aids came in the form of previous lovers. This could be a biased opinion of sorts as I find that trope to be stereotypical. However, I think this writing made her more relatable. And I’m still looking forward to more character development in the next few installments.

The storyline progresses quite quickly and was powerful in its message. The writing draws on parallels in this day and age, really drawing the reader in. I’ve said it before and I’ll probably say it again before this review is over but the message here makes this graphic novel one to read and definitely one to support!

Art

Visually this graphic novel is stunning. Christianne Gillenardo-Goudreau does an absolutely phenomenal job here. The colors are gorgeous and bright. Also, the story flows beautifully thanks to the design and lettering. If the story didn’t capture your attention enough than the artwork will definitely keep you captivated.

And the character design is really well-done. I love how the characters literally are all shapes and sizes. Each character has unique look while being beautiful. With the copy we received, we got to view the early concept art and alternative designs and each one is equally bewitching (pun intended!) You can also view these on their Kickstarter campaign.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what the next issues have in store!

Overall

This is and is going to be a great series! I Am Hexed #1 really sets everything up. We see magic users fight to gain legal protections and equality, clearly mimicking the fight for LGBTQA rights.

Each page is filled with beautiful art and it’s easy to read. Those who love current affairs or magical worlds will want to watch this series!

If you’re interested in seeing what the team have to offer then I strongly recommend you visit their website and Kickstarter campaign. These fantastic women can only accomplish greater things and as a member of the LGTBQ+ community, I really can’t wait to see the next installment of the series.
