Review – Lucifer S03E04 – What Would Lucifer Do?

Lucifer S03E04 – What Would Lucifer Do?

There’s nothing as difficult as changing. Some people welcome the change, others’ try to pretend it is not happening but most of the time the endpoint is the same, you either change or you don’t. This episode of Lucifer, written by Jason Ning, focused on the idea that people can’t change while bringing you to clear examples of both instances.

Lucifer and Chloe investigate the death of a counselor in Firehawk Ranch a high-end reform program. Lucifer focuses on trying to prove people can’t change while Chloe is focused on figuring out why Lieutenant Pierce is so hard on her. Meanwhile, Amenadiel tries to walk a mile in Lucifer’s shoes to hilarious and slightly dramatic results.

Best Close-Rate Best Detective

While Lucifer is dealing with the idea of change and trying to prove to everyone that his theory is correct, Chloe is trying to solve the case and figure out who killed the counselor. Last week we had them working together, this week they are both working on their own angles. Chloe gets turned down for the district manager? job when she asks for more responsibility but Lieutenant Pierce gives her no answer to why he turned her request down.

Throughout the episode, as new clues come in and others fall apart, he seems intent on pushing her and making her work harder if only to prove she’s the best detective he’s got. Chloe is confused as to why Pierce treats her like this and it makes for great television as Chloe shows that even without Lucifer or anyone else, she’s still a pretty kickass detective.

Ella tells Chloe that Pierce has feelings for her that’s why he treats her this way and considering what happened near the end of the episode, she might not be that far off. After all, you don’t jump in front of a bullet for just anyone.

Lauren German and Tom Welling’s chemistry is a great new addition to the show. It’s a very different relationship than the one between Chloe and Lucifer, Chloe and Dan or even Chloe and Maze. For the record, I am firmly team Deckestar but right now Lucifer seems to have a lot to deal with.

There’s nothing wrong with Chloe exploring her options a little bit, of course getting involved with your boss kind of spells trouble but I can’t wait to see where they go with it. I’m sure we’re in for quite a ride. At the very least Chloe will spend some time with a good guy and it might help Lucifer realize that Chloe is a catch if he doesn’t get his act together he might lose her.

Wings for the Reformed

Last week’s episode showed Maze realizing that she has roots and embracing the change in her, this week Lucifer is all about rejecting his own change. This week’s case is one Lucifer takes very personally, even more than he usually does. Ever since the reveal of the Sinnerman and his- let’s call them physical- changes he’s been trying ready hard to prove he’s the same devil he’s always been.

Everything he does, in this case, is to prove how much he hasn’t changed and how much the kids who are the suspects haven’t changed either. We get a lot of the typical Lucifer hijinks with fast cars and deepest desires. And we get Lucifer stoned while riding a white horse, something that I am sure Tom Ellis definitely got a laugh at.

All of this is done in the name of his “people can’t change” crusade, which is, of course, a front. He does in a way prove his point that people can’t change with the murderer and business partner but he also disproves his point if he just would look in a mirror. One of the things he finds the most offensive in this reform program in that the kids are given a sigil of wings once they have truly reformed. Of course, we know why this hits a bit of a sore spot for Lucifer.

Here he is trying to prove he is the same devil he’s always been and gets told, “wings are for the truly reformed” and is reminded of his own wings. Of the idea that maybe he got them back because he has reformed and Lucifer being Lucifer rejects all of that and lashes out.

Lucifer has been dealing with this since season one when Linda sat him down and talked about it. Back then he said he didn’t want to stay away from Chloe even if she was the reason for his change. So why is it that Lucifer seems to be losing his mind over it now? Well, it’s one thing to hear that you’re changing or in the process of change because as we know, something that is in the process that still deviates from its course.

For a man like Lucifer, that’s a very appealing option, to have the belief that he can stop the change at any moment. But the thing is that the change has happened. The wings and the lack of a devil face are proof of that. They’re proof that Lucifer can’t ignore and so he falls back into old patterns, pretends he hasn’t changed.

It’s not easy for Lucifer to come to terms with the fact that the change has happened, something Ellis portrays masterfully. As always actions have consequences by acting like his old self he ended up not being there for Chloe when she was in danger. This is a fact that he is very much aware off and immediately feels guilty. It was like a cold bucket of ice water fell off him as we see the realization of what he’s done.

Being there for Chloe has always been high on his list of priorities and by being caught up in his own issues with the change he failed at that task. So he does and does what he does best, he tries to punish the person responsible, mostly because he can’t punish himself and takes the anger out on the human. Amenadiel stops him before he goes too far and reminds him once again that he’s not evil he punishes evil.

Walk a Mile in my Shoes

Amenadiel has had a very tough time these past three seasons that’s for sure. He thinks he’s figured out what his Father wants from him he just doesn’t know how to go about it. He and Linda, who have missed this episode and who I hope is relaxing somewhere, figured out that Amenadiel’s task was Lucifer, but what does that mean exactly? Lucifer suggests that he walk a mile in his shoes, and yes that goes as badly as you’re imagining it.

Amenadiel strikes out with women, gets drinks thrown in his face, goes home with a prostitute and ends up in jail. So that’s definitely not what he was expecting to happen, but it made for hilarious television. He calls Dan to bail him out of prison and thankfully Dan knew someone at the jail so they let him go. They go back to Lux and Amenadiel tries to explain what he found out, well in human terms at least.

It’s during that conversation with Dan that he realizes something all of us already knew; Lucifer’s existence is a very lonely one. He thanks, Dan and Dan telling him that everyone needs for someone to be there for them and just like that something in Amenadiel clicks.

The end scene of the episode is one of the reasons I love this show so much. It has phenomenal acting from both D.B. Woodside and Tom Ellis and fantastic cinematography from director Eagle Egilsson. Yes, both Lucifer and Amenadiel are celestial beings but at their core, they are brothers, brothers with a very complicated relationship but still brothers.

Lucifer is completely convinced that he has proved his point, it doesn’t matter what his circumstances are he’s still a punisher so he hasn’t changed. Until Amenadiel points out that the person he was punishing wasn’t the human but rather himself for not being there for Chloe. He points out that his feelings for her are proof of how he’s changed and how he is evolving. He tells him how their Father’s plan is for Amenadiel to be there for Lucifer on this new path.

Of course, Amenadiel is no Dr. Linda Martin so his new revelation isn’t a welcome one. Here lies part of the beauty of this scene, Amenadiel is happy that he figured it out, Woodside is practically bouncing, and Lucifer is furious. He has his back turned so he doesn’t see his brother’s face or the way Ellis’ handshakes not even able to touch the piano keys.

And so Lucifer does what he does best, he lashes out. He starts telling a story with the intent of hurting his older brother and you know Amenadiel realizes that. In the close-ups of Woodside’s face you see how much the story is hurting him and then Lucifer lashes out even more. Both Ellis and Woodside are truly incredible as they sell the entire thing with just their eyes. You see the anger in Ellis’ eyes and the hurt in Woodside’s.

But the proof that Amenadiel has changed is that he doesn’t rise to the bait he just repeats what he said earlier, that he is here for his brother. He walks out and Lucifer is left alone and he throws a glass that cracks the mirror. He sees the cracked image of himself and it’s exactly the way he feels inside. You see the guilt manifest over his words to his brother, over his actions during the case, he doesn’t know who he is anymore. Lucifer at the moment is truly lost.

Amenadiel: Tell me how to….Lucifer

Lucifer Morningstar: Oh baby steps it took eons to perfect this

Lt Marcus Pierce: Well done Lucifer, way to be a good influence

Lucifer Morningstar: How dare you say that!

Marcus Pierce: I can see why Lucifer is so affected by you, it’s because you’re special Decker.

Amenadiel: You’re not evil, you punish evil.

  • The more we see of Pierce the more I like him but I’m still not ready to let my guard down.
  • Apparently, Pierce thinks Dan is a has-been, oh poor detective douche doesn’t even realize it.
  • Aimee Garcia’s Ella is always a joy to watch.
  • I’m pretty sure this episode marks the start of the love triangle between Pierce, Chloe, and Lucifer, as much as I despise love triangles I’m curious to see where they go with it.
  • I hope Linda is enjoying some relaxation because her hardest patient just got more complicated.
