Review – Marvel’s Runaways S01E07: Refraction

Marvel’s Runaways S01E07: Refraction

Last Week On Runaways

In last week’s episode of Marvel’s Runaways, all the main characters attended the Pride gala. Chase (Gregg Sulkin) kissed Karolina (Virginia Gardner), though she seemed more interested in Nico (Lyrica Ocano). Victor Stein (James Marsters) revealed that his wife, Janet (Ever Carradine), was having an affair with Robert Minoru (James Yaegashi), then collapsed on stage because of his secret brain tumor. Mystical figure Jonah (Julian McMahon) saved Victor from cancer, possibly enabling the Steins to become the happy family they seem to have never been. At the end of the episode, Catherine Wilder (Angel Parker) realized that Molly (Allegra Acosta) actually did go into the basement and most likely witnessed the Pride’s activities.

Relationships On the Rocks

Most of the relationships between characters seem to be disintegrating. The kids don’t get along so well anymore now that they’ll be turning in all of their parents in for murder. In particular, Nico is suspicious of Alex’s (Rhenzy Feliz) computer-fu with regard to figuring out her mom’s password last episode. Not to mention, Alex is angry at his parents, and his parents are suspicious of his anger (for good reason).

The intra-adult relationships aren’t particularly healthy either, but since a lot of them are built on hiding 15 years of murders in service of a possible alien, no one should be surprised.  Robert gets rejected by two women this episode: his wife Tina (Brittany Ishibashi), and his lover (ex-lover?) Janet. That episode-ending scene (which I won’t spoil) destroys another couple relationships, but next episode’s preview may indicate that this destruction will be more temporary than it looks.

Undoing Revelations

Most of this episode involves the adults trying to undo the revelations revealed in earlier episodes. Both the Wilders and the Yorkeses try to hide that Molly knew about Pride’s basement activities. This forces the Yorkeses to sever their relationship with Molly, which ties into the other theme of this episode. Janet tries to unrealize that she’s in an abusive relationship. Robert’s right: this is part of a cycle of abuse, and James Marsters’ puppy-dog eyes should not distract the viewer from his character’s consistently awful actions towards his family (even though Jonah’s magic medicine minimizes those actions for most of the episode).

Leslie Dean (Annie Wersching) spends the episode trying to keep cats in bags. She wants to keep Frank (Kip Pardue) from interfering in her church, but after Jonah seems to give it up for lost, she actually chooses to let Frank in. Jonah charges Leslie with keeping Pride together, meaning that the couples should recouple. Her efforts seem ultimately successful, but the episode’s conclusion may upend them. In addition, there doesn’t seem to be an effort that will successfully prevent the children from having them all arrested.

Let me ask the question on many people’s minds: when are the Runaways going to run away? The show seems to be going around in circles a little bit. The time it’s taking Alex to decode the video only seems to drag out the tension even more, allowing the parents to wreck and unwreck relationships as it pleases them. We don’t need the parents, we have kids with powers! Let’s ditch this arc and get on to the kids vs. the big wide world! (Note that at this rate, there’s no way this is happening before the season finale.)

Next week on Marvel’s Runaways, Jonah aims to interfere in the life and death of a Pride member.
