Into the Dark With Shadow Service #2
When we last left Gina Meyer she was in trouble. Well, a bit more trouble than the witch private investigator usually finds herself in normally. For the longest time Gina thought she was the only one with powers, well besides her talking rat friend Edward. She is in for a rude awakening in Shadow Service #2 as Gina finds herself in the clutches of MI666. An organization that keeps more supernatural matters under control.
What do they want with Gina and are they friend or foe? Gina’s wits and magic get her out of a lot of hairy situations. But this is something altogether different.
If you recall in my review of the first issue, I adored this series but was a little bit skeptical about it jumping into this big story with the MI666 organization and whatnot. I wanted more if Gina just being a private investigator. I did not want a jump into a “big story” so soon. My worries were dispelled from the jump as Scott continues to dig into the head of Gina Meyer. While I still want to see more of just Gina as witch/PI small stories; Cavan Scott delivers a tremendous story in Shadow Service #2.
Her character does not get lost in developing into this much larger story and the world, which is what I feared. Scott continues to slowly pull back the layers of this character and this world. Gina continues to be a supremely interesting character that continues to capture my attention.
As much as a didn’t want to I am enjoying this MI666 organization and larger world Scott has introduced. The characters and developments laid out in Shadow Service #2 are wonderfully interesting. I like this little world Cavan has started to build with these odd different characters.
The story itself continues to also unravel nicely in this issue. Where I felt I might fall off with having more characters and a bigger story has left me a little more intrigued and interested to see what is going to happen. It helps that the focus is not taken off Gina and she is still the crutch of the story.
The art in Shadow Service #2 continues to be excellent. Corin Howell is an artist that is definitely on my radar now. He delivers was tremendous visuals throughout the issue. He has some great body horror elements in this issue that will definitely make you a bit squeamish. This issue adds a bit more to the horror element of the book.
He has a fantastic eye for detail as well. Bringing this world to life with little subtleties here and there. Also, he continues to deliver some delightful character acting as well. He enhances the storytelling with his character’s emotion displayed with his art. The overall style of Howell’s art fits so well with the series. It is a bit realistic yet still animated type style and it works with the story perfectly.
Triona Ferrell continues to deliver some delightful coloring work as well in Shadow Service #2. She does a fantastic job of mixing the brightness and darkness with this series. She captures the more horror/supernatural side well. While still not making it too dark and dreary.
Shadow Service #2 is an excellent second issue and this is probably my favorite new series out there right now. The creative team has captured me with this new character and story. While we have seen elements of this type of story a lot the way the creative team has brought them together delivers a splendid character and world that captures the imagination. This has become one of those series I can’t what to get the next issue in my hands and one everyone should be reading!
