The Avengers are caught in a vampire civil war; luckily, Blade has just become an official member just in time!
“Vampires Everywhere” in The Avengers #14
Well, it is finally here: Jason Aaron has been teasing it for a while and the vampire civil war has hit the Marvel Universe in full force in The Avengers #14! A new group of vampires called the Legion of the Unliving has set out to dethrone Dracula as the king of the undead, creating a rift among vampires that now has spilled out into the world. It is up to the Avengers to figure out what is going on and how to stop it. Luckily the newest recruit knows a thing or two about vampires and killing them; his name is Blade!
Man oh man, I have been pretty hyped about this storyline since Jason Aaron started teasing it earlier on in his run and when I read the solicits about it previously. Jason Aaron makes it live up to the hype! I can’t say exactly why I enjoyed this issue so much. Maybe it is the serious, dreadful tone Aaron narrates the issue with? Maybe it is some really goofy one-liners from characters? Or it could be just seeing our favorite heroes battling the undead across the pages? I am not exactly sure, but I just had a fantastic time reading this issue.
Aaron nails a serious yet campy tone with The Avengers #14. The vampire threat is taken seriously and there is some heavy stuff said and done in the issue but it also has some good comedic things to it as well. I mean, you can’t help but smile and laugh when Blade is dropping vampire-themed one-liners and wielding nunchucks (ah, a fellow chucker)! Aaron strikes that nice balance between serious and goofy that I love.
Aaron paces The Avengers #14 perfectly. It bounces back and forth from different story points and characters. The story constantly feels in motion as different sets of Avengers take on the undead across the world.
I always love when David Marquez is on a book. His art is so dynamic and detailed. I mean, anytime you get some David Marquez art it is a delight, but you add in Blade battling vampires with nunchucks or Cap beheading vampires with his shield; then, I mean, what else could you want from life? He structures his panels in more “simplistic” ways, but the angles and perspective he gives on scenes make them so fluid. He has a fantastic sense of motion across pages and panels.
I am not 100% sure who the credit should go to for designing this new version of the “Legion of the Unliving” but my gosh they all have great concepts to them! Marquez brings them all to life in some beautiful detail. They all have that little “flair” to them that makes you want to know more about them.
Obviously, we can’t leave out colorists Justin Ponsor & Erick Arciniega when talking about the beautiful art in The Avengers #14. Again, they hit that perfect spot where things are very dark and moody for the issue. But then it is just bright enough to not go overboard with the ghoulish theme.
The Avengers #14 had everything I wanted from this storyline. We are dropped right into the vampire civil war and the hunt for Dracula. Aaron toes that nice line of serious yet funny at the same time perfectly. The art from Marquez, Ponsor & Arciniega is just spectacular. I didn’t want this issue to be done. As soon as I got to the final page I wanted more immediately, and that is probably some of the best praise I can give to a comic.
