Vengeance is Served in The Crow: Memento Mori #4

Previously we learned that father Raphael had some secrets of his own. It seems he was working with the Muslim terrorist group that attacked the Catholic march that killed David and Sarah. But what would a Catholic Priest be doing with a Muslim terrorist group? And what was his morbid fascination with David all about? The Crow: Memento Mori #4 brings a shocking conclusion that you won’t see coming!

If you dropped off this series thinking it was another basic The Crow revenge/vengeance story then you should definitely hop back on and pick up The Crow: Memento Mori #4. I am going to have to dance around this issue so I don’t spoil anything, but my gosh Roberto Recchioni did an incredible job of doing something very new and inventive with The Crow “legend”. This is one of those instances where I thought I had everything figured out. I mean Recchioni laid everything out for the past three issues where you could basically see where it was going. The Crow: Memento Mori #4 follows that structure and kind of lulls you into that, “Oh, I know how this is ending”, sense and then Recchioni completely flips the script and it is amazing!

I was completely caught off guard with the twist toward the end of the issue. I had been liking the story up until that point.  It was your basic The Crow vengeance/revenge story. But it had some nice quirks and changes to it to make it interesting. With this twist, it propelled itself into a great story that I want more of. The backup story is pretty solid.  Nothing crazy but a different twist on The Crow mythos and a nice short story.

The art team of Werther Dell’Edra and Giovanna Niro continues to do some stellar work in The Crow: Memento Mori #4. Niro uses some brighter coloring work in this issue to great effect. It’s not like a neon or dazzling bright coloring but more of a bland shaded coloring.  However, it is bright for the series. It works extremely well contrasted with the darker settings and dark story overtone.  Werther Dell’Edra continues to do some great penciling and ink work. The thick ink lines with a sketchy feel to them have worked extremely well throughout this series. I do wish the characters had a little more emotion to their faces though.

The backup/ short story art by Daniel Serra is pretty solid. The characters’ body proportions are a little “off” in a few scenes so it makes it a little awkward.  Other than that the art style fits the story well. The colors work extremely well.  The light and dark browns give a feel of an old faded storybook and produce some haunting images.

Overall I was enjoying The Crow Memento Mori.  It wasn’t the greatest thing ever, but it tells a good The Crow story with some interesting modifications. Then this issue hit and completely blew me away. If you have read this series or one issue and thought you knew where this was going, well you don’t. What delightful surprise this issue turned out to be!  It’s a must read!
