“War Ensemble” TMNT #87
Agent Bishop and The EPF started their attack on Burnow Island in TMNT #86. The Turtles were tipped off by April and set some plans in action. The Triceratons and Utroms caught off guard scramble to set up defences and fight back. Someone decides the let Ch’Rell out of prison stasis (much like Krang, Ch’Rell is a devious Utrom who wants to enslave the Triceratons again and take over). Ch’rell loads up in her battle suit and for now, helps to fight back. The Turtles enlist the help of The Mutanimals in an attempt to stop Agent Bishop and free Slash from his control. The war on Burnow Island rages on in TMNT #87 and Agent Bishop’s secrets continue to be revealed!
TMNT #87 is a lot of fun and brings up some new interesting things about Agent Bishop. It was teased in the last issue that his dad was one of the first people to find an Utrom on Earth. Framing it as the famous 1947 Roswell New Mexico UFO crash. We already know Agent Bishop is some type of Cyborg, but TMNT #87 teases some new very interesting information about his character.
I like that they are also continuing the storyline with Ch’rell and Zom leader of the Triceratons. Now that Ch’rell has been released. It puts everyone in an odd predicament. Ch’rell was locked due to her trying to incite another war between the two races, but she is also a good military leader and has quite the robotic war suit, so they kind of need her at this time also. It brings about this whole thin/unstable agreement between the two that the writers are doing a great job playing with.
Dave Wachter continues to do some tremendous work in TMNT #87. I love all of his character work (besides the Turtles themselves). That Mech suit Ch’rell wears is incredibly detailed and imposing. It looks fantastic. The first page of TMNT #87 is Ch’rell in the mech suit giving a speech and the detail Wachter puts in it is awesome, it is a great way to show off its design.
Wachter lays out TMNT #87 in exciting ways as well. Most of the issue takes place on the “battlefields” of Burnow Island. Wachter does a great job of making some great angled panel layouts that increase the action and makes for an intense “feel” to the battle scenes.
Ronda Pattison adds some terrific coloring work as well. She paints Burnow Island in this opaque red coloring that gives off an eerie atmosphere to the battle. There are also some great little scenes of the individual Turtles taking out soldiers and Pattison puts their respective colors in the background so we know who is attacking. It is a small thing that is always fun to see.
TMNT #87 is a great “middle issue” for this story arc. It sets up some interesting plot details and pushes the story in all the right directions. Wachter does a fantastic job on all these characters. From the Mutanimals to the Triceratons he delivers some wonderfully detailed characters. He also knows how to draw and exciting battle! Ronda Pattison’ colors continue to be magical as always. IDW’s TMNT series continues to be fantastic and everyone should be reading it!
