Variety is reporting Richard E Grant is set to join season 6 of the popular HBO series Game of Thrones in a role that is not yet publicly known. Richard E Grant is known for roles in the films Dracula (1992) and The Corpse Bride.
There are several possible upcoming roles that Richard E Grant could possibly fill. One of these potential roles is of Randyll Tarly, Samwell Tarly’s militaristic and abusive father. Tarly gave Sam a choice before the series began–join the Night’s Watch or die. He despises Sam for being too soft and forces Sam to take himself out of the line of succession in favor of his younger brother Dickon, who has already been cast. Richard E Grant could also have been cast as Aeron Greyjoy, younger brother to current Ironborn leader Balon Greyjoy. Aeron Greyjoy is referred to in universe as “the Prophet”, and acts as the Ironborn’s religious center.
Speaking of the Ironborn, another possibility for Grant is Victarion Greyjoy, another of Balon Greyjoy’s younger brothers. Getting too much into his book role would spoil a certain plot point for show watchers, but I do feel comfortable stating that he’s rather pugilistic. With A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones‘ historic amount of characters, it’s possible that there are other casting possibilities I’m forgetting, but personally I think Grant will most likely play either Randyll Tarly or Aeron Greyjoy.
There are also roles that Richard E Grant cannot now fill, as they’ve already been cast. The only Greyjoy brother that I did not list above, Euron, will be played by Pilou Asbæk. Bran’s Three Eyed Raven will be played by Max Von Sydow. Ian McShane has also been cast in an unspecified role, although we know that he will have a scene with a band of outlaws, so he’s probably not any of the roles that I suggested.
Game of Thrones returns to HBO in April 2016.
