What’s Going On With Riz Ahmed?
This past April, Star Wars Celebration Chicago was in full swing. People had bought tickets with hopes of getting a chance to meet Riz Ahmed, who played Bodhi Rook in Rogue One. News would come that his appearance at the celebration had suddenly been canceled and any event featuring him was canceled and being refunded.
At the time there was little known about why he suddenly canceled. Now, thanks to a report from Kirsten Chuba at THR, we know more. According to the report, Ahmed was speaking at a CAA event, where he disclosed why the sudden cancellation:
“[Hassan Minhaj] can win a Peabody, I can win an Emmy, Ibtihaj Muhammad can go to the Olympics, but some of these obstacles are systemic and we can’t really face them alone, we need your help. I’m basically here to ask for your help, because it’s really scary to be a Muslim right now, super scary. I’ve often wondered, is this going to be the year when they round us up, if this is going to be the year they put Trump’s registry into action. If this is going to be the year they ship us all off.”
We, As Fans
I know when diving into political issues things get tricky. We all have our certain beliefs, but honestly, this is ridiculous. Let me jump on my high horse just really quick *jumping on my high horse now…* okay. A story like this isn’t new. There have been multiple times where people, even celebrities, have been denied entrance to the states for no particular reason. Ahmed is an accomplished actor who was denied entrance to the states for work, where I’m 100% positive Disney would have all the proper visas and paperwork worked out for the employees of these global franchises. I mean, the Rogue One film is filled with a cast from all over the world and the only one who seemed not to be able to make it was one man who identifies as Muslim.
I know sometimes fandoms can be divisive, but we are part of a global community and Riz Ahmed is a part of this community. As a community, all we can do is speak up when we see unjust acts and support the people who are affected by these acts.
So I challenge you to show support for Riz Ahmed. Show him love on social media. Speak out when you see something unjust. Remember we are stronger together. I mean, you think any politician wants to anger all the Star Wars fans? Just think about how many of us there are and how many lightsabers we own. WE WILL GO TO WAR… like, not real war, but trust me, they don’t want the pain of a lightsaber catching their ankle, or their names being used for Sith Lord characters.
Show support and love for your fellow nerds on on social media today. Tell me what you think your state senators’ Sith names would be. Love y’all!
