Liefeld Predicts DC’s Doom
Rob Liefeld is many things. He is the co-creator of Deadpool, as well as one of the most successful artists of all time. He is also known for many art sins, including a lack of drawing feet. Now, hot on the heels of his Major X project for Marvel, he thinks himself a prophet. Specifically, he has predicted the doom of DC Comics. In a Twitter rant on Monday, Liefeld predicted that DC was set to collapse. This comes after a series of bad events for Marvel’s Distinguished Competition. Fan outrage over Batman casting, a canceled show, and a movie slate struggling to keep up with Marvel’s have made them the internet’s whipping boy. Liefeld seems to be taking a perverse delight in DC supposedly being about to collapse.
This is of course, completely unprofessional. It is also not the first time he has burned bridges with the company. In 2012, he rage-quit DC Comics, and proceeded to attack them online. While he recently drew a couple variants for the company, he seems to have completely destroyed his chances of working there again.
Talent such as Mark Millar (who has his own history of attacking DC) called him out on this, but Liefeld continued to bash and gloat over the supposed doom of DC.
Why He Is Wrong
But of course, He-Who-Can’t-Draw-Feet is wrong. Aquaman and Shazam! were successes for DC Comics. The comics are critically acclaimed, and most of them are selling better than Liefeld’s Major X. That DC is still second in sales to Marvel is mainly for two reasons. The first is that Marvel puts out FAR more product than anyone else. Secondly, they produce a ton of variants for speculators. This gives them an unfair advantage. And comics-sales-wise, DC ain’t doing too bad. The recent sales charts have DC selling more units, and neck and neck in terms of dollar share. It is clear Liefeld is dead wrong.
A Case of Distraction
There must be a reason for Liefeld’s unprofessional behavior. Speculation currently abounds that this weekend was a bad one for him. Liefeld was forced to refund numerous donations to his three year-overdue Kickstarter. Could this rant of his be a distraction to cover for his own failings?
In any event, DC needs to permaban him. As for Marvel, if they had any decency towards DC, they would punish him swiftly. Marvel should cancel his Major X series, and bar him from working for them as well.
We will see what will happen, but it’s likely Liefeld is a false prophet.
