Batman is reborn! Or at least, recast. In the wake of Ben Affleck leaving the role, Matt Reeves was on the hunt for a replacement Dark Knight. Reeves wanted someone younger for his Batman, for it would act as a DCEU prequel. In recent weeks, one name has stood out above the rest as a candidate. Robert Pattinson, the former Twilight star and current Cannes darling, was reportedly in negotiations to play the part earlier this month. However, according to recent reports, he was on a short list with one rival, X-Men actor Nicholas Hoult. The two actors, according to Umberto Gonzalez, reported to WB this week for screen and costume tests. Well, white smoke must be seen from the WB Watertower, because we have a Batman! Pattinson, according to Variety, has gotten the part; WB is to do a more official announcement soon.
New Trilogy To Begin Filming In 2020
Furthermore, according to Deadline, Pattinson has signed up for what will be now Reeves’ Batman trilogy. While pre-production on the film will begin imminently, filming is unlikely to begin until Q1 of 2020. The film itself won’t take its debut bow until June 25, 2021. In the meantime, Pattinson will likely be training hard as Reeves continues casting his villains and supporting cast. It also won’t be unsurprising if we hear more news about the film, albeit preliminary, at this year’s SDCC.
But what does this mean for the DCEU in general? While Reeves has stated in the past that his then film was DCEU connected, some reports are saying it will be its own separate entity. It is also possible that DC Films will be resorting to comic book style retcons to shore up their shared universe. As there are often more rumors than facts in regards to DC Films, we will have to wait and see.
