Director Robert Scheerer Dies at 89

Director Robert Scheerer has passed away from natural causes at the age of 89. He died earlier this month on March 3, 2018. Scheerer was well known in nerd circles for directing 14 episodes of the 50-year-old Star Trek franchise. He directed 11 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, one episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and two episodes of Star Trek: Voyager. Although he was primarily a director, Scheerer was also an actor and producer on various projects.

Robert ScheererScheerer is also known for directing another group of projects: live musicals. Before the recent glut of live musicals that network television has been airing, Scheerer directed a number of notable ones. These include the 1986 film version of Candide and An Evening with Danny Kaye and the New York Philharmonic. He also directed episodes of musical high school show Fame, which is the basis of another musical. In his earlier years, Scheerer was a dancer. Foremost among his dancing credits, he shared the stage with Julie Andrews in The Boy Friend. His early experience dancing may have inspired him to direct material with musical numbers.

Scheerer directed episodes for a number of episodic television shows popular in the 20th century. Some of the classic shows Scheerer directed for include Matlock, The Love Boat, Dynasty, and the original version of Hawaii 5-O. His directing garnered him a total of 10 Emmy award nominations. During his prolific and long career, he only won one Emmy Award for his directing on the classic show The Danny Kaye Show.

Scheerer also directed three feature films: the 1970 film Adam at 6 am, the 1973 film The World’s Greatest Athlete, and the 1980 film How to Beat the High Co$t of Living.

Robert Scheerer is survived by his wife, Denise Scheerer, two children from his first marriage, Amanda Scheerer, and Evan Scheerer; stepdaughter Angel Pennington, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
