Thanks to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, actress Daisy Ridley is now a part of the cultural consciousness, one result of which is inevitable rumors. But at least this latest rumor is a good one. Deadline reports that Ridley is up for consideration as the new Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot.
The original Tomb Raider movies starred Angelina Jolie, but it’s been 13 years since Jolie took on the title role and a lot has changed in the Tomb Raider franchise. The franchise and Lara Croft herself got a video game reboot in 2013’s Tomb Raider, which gave the character a new origin story.
Norwegian director Roar Uthaug (The Wave), who signed onto the movie reboot in 2015, told IGN that the movie will take its cue from the new version of Lara Croft. The movie will also be an origin story, but it’s unclear if it will be borrowing any story elements from Tomb Raider and its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, or if the plot will be entirely new.
An avid Tomb Raider fan who has been playing the games since 1996, Uthaug praised the rebooted video games and their ability to make us feel for Lara Croft again. Uthaug said, “I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well. I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character.”
He also indicated that he wants the Tomb Raider reboot to feel more like Indiana Jones. “Raiders of the Lost Ark was one of my favorite films growing up, so it’s definitely a dream to work in that kind of genre,” he said. “I think we’ll want to make it feel like a modern action movie and to make what’s going on feel like it’s going on for real.”
Nothing is official regarding Ridley’s involvement in the project, and Deadline mentions that she is only one of several actresses in possible consideration for the role. Ridley’s Rey was the stand-out character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens with demand for Rey-based toys soaring after the movie’s release. The actress also received several award nominations for the role. She is currently shooting Star Wars Episode VIII but has no movies lined up post-Star Wars, so she would be available for Tomb Raider, if she were to be offered the part.
With this new take on Lara Croft, would you like to see Daisy Ridley in the role? Or should someone else get the part?
