Riri Williams May Replace Tony Stark in the MCU
The Marvel Cinematic Universe did not have a big presence or any announcements at all at San Diego Comic-Con this year. That did not stop the rumor mill from turning, though. News has come out that there is a possible script out for recently introduced hero Riri Williams, AKA Ironheart, to replace Tony Stark/Iron Man in the MCU. The Black List notes that Jada Rodriguez has written the rumored script that has the young hero taking over.
Who Is Ironheart?
Riri Williams/Ironheart is a fairly new comic book hero created by Brian Michael Bendis and designed by Mike Deodato Jr. She first appeared in Invincible Iron Man volume 2 issue #7 in 2016. Riri Williams is a 15-year-old African-American girl with a genius level intellect and a knack for engineering. She made her own version of an Iron Man suit from scrap parts. She eventually gained the support of Tony Stark and took on the codename Ironheart. More recently in comics, she has joined the teenage superhero group the Champions.
Nothing Last Forever
The biggest question surrounding the MCU has been what happens after the yet untitled Avengers 4 next summer? With Captain America actor Chris Evans noting this will be his last outing as the Star-Spangled Avenger and Robert Downey Jr. not getting any younger and costing more money for his services, the MCU will need some new heroes to step up. Luckily, with Black Panther being a breakout hit and Captain Marvel set to premiere in less than a year, a new slate of heroes looks to be set to take over. Could we see Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark phase out of being Iron Man?
Ironheart, Clean Slate
If Riri Williams is mentored by Tony Stark in a possible Iron Man 4 she would be a pretty clean slate as a character for the writers. Obviously right now she has only been around for two years, so her character does not have decades of history like Iron Man or other Marvel characters. The writers would have a lot of room to add their own “flair” to her. She would also add another young actor to the MCU—much like Tom Holland—who could be brought along for a longer term with aging not being too much of a problem.
But Will Ironheart Sell?
The biggest question for the heads at MCU is will Ironheart generate the same amount of money as Iron Man? That is going to depend on several factors. If the script is good and the story is good, no problem; good stories will always catch on. Casting is another major detail that the MCU has had just about a 100% success rate with.
Ironheart/Riri Williams has not been around very long, so she does not have any name recognition with people who do not read Marvel comics. However, you could have said the same thing about Iron Man when his film debuted back in 2008. Nobody outside of comic book readers really knew who Iron Man was. Luckily the script was excellent and Robert Downey Jr. made the character his own. Ironheart is going to need the same things to catch the moviegoers’ attention and make her a star.
