Batman locale Arkham Asylum has been featured in plenty of comic books and video games but has rarely made an appearance in the live action movie franchise. But the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) may be looking to change that. Batman on Film reports Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie may just take place at the infamous asylum.
Solo Batman Movie Focused on Arkham Asylum
According to rumor, The Batman – the solo movie’s unofficial title – could see its title character being locked up in Arkham Asylum for at least part of the movie. Details on the would-be plot are scarce, but this rumor does line up with a few recent reports that the solo movie will feature most of Batman’s rogues’ gallery.
The idea behind bringing in as many villains as possible is to make The Batman “the ultimate Batman story.” Setting the movie at Arkham Asylum would do double duty here: one, all the villains would be easily accessible and two, the highly recognizable Arkham should be featured in the “ultimate” Batman movie.
Ben Affleck, who will be co-writing and directing the movie in addition to staring in it, has said that he expects his solo film to borrow from the comics.
In an interview with Cines Argentinos, Affleck stated:
“I think what I would do, what I probably would do, is in some ways what Zack Snyder did with this [Batman v Superman], which is to borrow certain things from the great comic books, but create an original story around it because I wouldn’t want the fans to already know the story and be familiar, but I would borrow, steal, great things that have been done before in the comics.”
Could one of those influences be Grant Morrison’s graphic novel Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, which inspired the Batman: Arkham video game series? Batman on Film says don’t expect a straight adaptation, but inspiration is definitely on the table.
Will the Joker be around to Menace Batman?
Because of the shared nature of the DCEU, the Batman solo film is already rumored to include the Joker, who will make his first official appearance in the universe in next month’s Suicide Squad. Indeed, Ben Affleck himself helped fan the flames on this piece of gossip.
Talking about his role as executive producer for Justice League, Affleck told Comicbook.com, “There’s some cross pollination of story and characters and I don’t want to give any stuff of that away, but it just basically means that there might be some things that happen in my Batman that are affected by [this film].”
We already know that Suicide Squad will include a trip to Arkham Asylum and that the Joker is or was a resident there, but given the fact that the Joker isn’t an official member of the Suicide Squad and the fact that there’s a huge cast for that movie, speculation has it that the Joker won’t be truly introduced until Justice League.
If Ben Affleck and DC Entertainment are concerned that Justice League might affect the solo Batman movie, it stands to reason that the Joker – and Arkham Asylum – could feature in both.
Are you excited to finally see Arkham on the big screen? Or are you upset that this new storyline might replace the previous rumors of Red Hood? Which would you rather see the DCEU tackle first?
