More Team-Ups for the Directing Team
Some exciting MCU news came out today. Just not the Avengers 4 trailer most were expecting to drop sometime this week. During a Collider event that had a screening of Infinity War, Joe and Anthony Russo took part in a Q&A. After making it known that after the next Avengers movie the brothers will be taking a break from superhero movies, the topic of what would facilitate a return naturally came up. So what is the storyline that would bring the Russo brothers back into the world of tights? It would be if the directing team had the chance to helm a Secret Wars movie.
So what is Secret Wars? Secret Wars is a comic crossover event that pitted teams of heroes and villains against each other on a plane called Battleworld. There are two Secret Wars events; the first was released in 1984 and was created by Jim Shooter and Michael Zeck. The second was as recent as 2015 and done by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic. The Russo brothers are more familiar with the Shooter and Zeck classic.
And honestly the choice makes a lot of sense. The brothers have shown that they can handle a variety of team-ups, from including Black Widow, Nick Fury, and introducing Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (which remains my favorite Marvel movie, I mean that bridge fight scene tho) to the fairly small-scale crossover that was Captain America: Civil War. I categorize the latter as small-scale when compared to their latest entry that was the massively epic crossover Avengers: Infinity War. All were fan favorite entries into the MCU. So if the time ever comes for a Secret Wars movie (maybe phase 7), then it will at least fall into capable hands.
Future for the Russo Brothers
But with the step away from the superhero genre, what does that mean for future projects from the brothers? Personally, I would enjoy a return to television comedy. The Russo brothers have worked on some of my favorite cult comedies, such as Community, Happy Endings, and Arrested Development. The brothers have actually credited their time working on these projects as how they were able to bring a more comedic tone to the MCU. As of now, they are serving as producers for the upcoming tv series of Deadly Class and Quantum and Woody. Both are adaptations of comics, so they may be leaving the superhero genre, but they are not straying too far.
So what do you think about the brothers leaving the realm of spandex? Are there any other storylines you would have liked to have seen them adapt? Let us know down below!
