Ryan Gosling Takes a Giant Leap in First Man

Ryan Gosling Prepares for Liftoff

Universal Pictures released the first trailer for First Man, a biopic about the first moon landing. Ryan Gosling plays Neil Armstrong, the first human to set foot on the moon. Damien Chazelle directs (Whiplash, La La Land), and the film hits theaters October 12th, 2018.

Damien Chazelle Trades in Jazz for Space

On July 20th, 1969, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins successfully piloted the first lunar vessel to the moon. On Earth, a control room full of scientists and mathematicians watched history be made. The story is a testament to humankind’s ability to innovate when a clear goal is set. Many of the technologies used during the Apollo missions paved the way for modern computing. In the fifty years since, countless books and movies were written about the team that made the moon landing possible. However, no film concentrated directly on the men in the lunar vessel, led by Armstrong.

Enter Damien Chazelle. The acclaimed director announced First Man, an adaptation of the biography of the same name, as his follow-up to La La Land. Chazelle established himself in 2014 with Whiplash. The debut film received critical acclaim and a boatload of awards. His next feature, La La Land, cemented his status as a Hollywood heavyweight. So, with any choice of project before him, he chose to tell Armstrong’s story with Ryan Gosling in the role. Universal Pictures released the first look of Gosling & Co’s trip to the moon. Apparently, the first week of June is excellent trailer week. This week gave us trailers for a variety of different films, and the majority of them are great. Obviously, the trailer for First Man is no exception. Once again, Chazelle finds a winning combination in Gosling and cinematographer Linus Sandgren. The film is gorgeous, with some of the best space photography since Gravity. And, of course, Gosling brings his signature simmering intensity to Neil Armstrong. While he opts to not do a full-on vocal impression, the actor imbues Armstrong with the air of someone driven by a dream. Essentially, he is a stand-in for a hopeful humanity that pushes the limits of their bodies and technology for a breakthrough. If the final product is as good as the trailer promises, First Man will definitely find Chazelle and friends seated at the Oscars once again.
