Ryan Reynolds in Talks for Netflix’s Dragon’s Lair Adaptation

Netflix Is Producing a Live-Action Dragon’s Lair Adaptation and Ryan Reynolds Is Set to Star

Dragon’s Lair, a popular arcade game of the 1980s, is getting a live-action adaptation. Netflix purchased the rights to the game after nearly a year of negotiations. Now, they have just the man to star: Ryan Reynolds

Dragon’s Lair hit the arcades in 1983. Its revolutionary movie-style animation captivated players everywhere. While it didn’t take off as originally hoped, it stays in gamer memory as a classic. It even appeared on the Netflix original Stranger Things, a show set in the ’80s.

The plot of the game is a classic fantasy epic. Dirk the Daring, a knight, must save Princess Daphne from villains: the evil dragon Singe and the cunning wizard Mordroc. I think this lends itself well to an ongoing series, especially after the success of The Witcher, which Netflix also produced.

The Dragon’s Lair Team

Industry legends are coming together for the Dragon’s Lair series. Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, and John Pomeroy will produce. Bluth’s animation was part of the original game. Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment and Trevor Engelson of Underground Films will also serve as producers. Reynolds’s production company, Maximum Effort, will be producing as well.

Lee recently produced It Chapter Two, based on the Stephen King classic. Engelson helped produce Snowfall.

Dan and Kevin Hageman will write the script. The pair have worked on other great films such as The Lego Movie and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. They also serve as showrunners for the Nickelodeon animated Star Trek series.

Reynolds and His Projects

Reynolds is now up to three projects with Netflix. He just released the action movie 6 Underground through the streaming service in December. Currently, he’s shooting another action movie with Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson called Red Notice

Dragon’s Lair is not his first video game-themed work. He starred in Free Guy, a movie where the main character realizes he is a background character in a video game. It is set to be released this summer, though that may be delayed now amid coronavirus concerns.

Reynolds is also slated to appear in two other movies this year. One will be with Salma Hayek and Samuel L. Jackson, called The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, and the other is DreamWorks’ The Croods 2, opening in December.
