It seems that the rumors are over and Scarlett Johansson will be the main character of the Ghost in the Shell film. The rumors started back in October of 2014 with no clear answer but today we have confirmation that Johansson will play the role of Mokoto Kusanagi (created by Masamune Shirow) in the film produced by DreamWorks and director Rupert Sanders of Snow White and the Huntsman fame.
Johansson is a popular actress with good talent ranging from playing in the Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Don Jon, Her, Under the Skin, and Lost in Translation. However, she is people always have worries that she will not do the movie justice after such a movie as Lucy (which only got a relative 60 percent from IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic) and the fact that many American-made Japanese anime movies do not stay true to the source material, i.e. Dragonball Evolution and Speed Racer.
Though there are always risk when taking known material and adapting it to the big screen. It has been seen with comics to films all the time and books to TV shows, or whatever the format. Johansson is a good actress and has proven that she can be up for the task of playing the cybernetic major, Mokoto Kusanagi. The world will just have to wait to hear and see more of this product before jumping the gun here.
