There is so much news and other great things coming out SDCC this weekend that it is hard to know where to begin our coverage. But let’s start with one of the biggest trailer debuts so far. Racking up over 11 million views at the time of this writing, the new trailer for Justice League is all we’ve been able to talk about here at Word of the Nerd. From the gloriousness that is Wonder Woman to some much-needed footage of Ezra Miller’s Flash, the trailer which clocks in at about four minutes.
As reported earlier this year, Justice League does return us to Themyscira where it looks like Steppenwolf arrives on Earth. There is a battle with Hippolyta are her Amazon army. Things probably go wrong which would eventually attract Diana’s attention. There is an ominous voiceover by Ciarán Hinds’ Steppenwolf where he mentions what is obviously the Green Lantern Corps and without Superman, Earth will fall.
That’s a brilliant setup for what promises to be an epic battle between a newly formed Justice League versus Steppenwolf, general of the maniacal Darkseid. Even with the massive success of Wonder Woman this summer, there is still a lot riding on the success of Justice League. The film has not been light on controversy including the departure of Zack Snyder, the takeover by Joss Whedon, the rumors of massive reshoots and just this week, the rumor of Ben Affleck’s imminent replacement as Batman.
Nevertheless, Justice League appears like it will hold its own come November and pave the way for the superhero solo films to come. With Aquaman already in production, a solo Flash film (which has had director problems), a Wonder Woman sequel on deck, and plans for Batgirl, Green Lantern, Shazam and a Suicide Squad sequel, there is a lot riding (again) on this box office success of Justice League.
Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
