Set Photos Give First Look at Benedict Cumberbatch In ‘Doctor Strange’

After years of hope and speculation, Doctor Strange is getting a movie. With a November 2016 release date, Marvel has started production and has opted to film on location in Nepal. With this being a Marvel film, all eyes want to see what is happening on the set and the first round of set photos have been released online. Though no story details have been officially announced, Kevin Feige has stated that Doctor Strange will be an origin story.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkselsen, and Rachael McAdams are all set to bring the Sorcerer Supreme’s story to life. See Cumberbatch, Ejiofer, and director Scott Derickson in the photos below (via Collider.)

There is a lot to be excited about with these photos. First, there is the fact that they are actually making a Doctor Strange movie. Doctor Strange features a world of the supernatural, psychedelic meditation, eastern mysticism, and much more. Marvel is going full steam ahead. Back in June, Feige said that they are planning on surprising audiences with “mind-bending weirdness.

Marvel has gone for the weird before. They pushed forward and established a world where its heroes can be based in the real world (Black Widow, Hawkeye), futuristic technology (Iron Man), scientific experimentation (Hulk, Captain America), space (Guardians of the Galaxy), or even Norse mythology (Thor). With Doctor Strange, the magical realm (slightly touched on in Thor) will be fully brought into this world.

The other aspect to get excited about these photos comes with the filmmaking team behind them. Scott Derrickson and Marvel could have easily built a set here in the States, but they are in full form shooting on location in Nepal. Derrickson is an inspired choice to bring Doctor Strange to life. A veteran of effective horror (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister), he looks to be the person to bring the supernatural to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Doctor Strange will be released in theaters on November 4, 2016. No plot details have been announced, but the 2007 animated film of the same name was a great adaptation of the source material and looks to be a comparable source for a synopsis:

Talented yet arrogant surgeon Dr. Stephen Strange suffers a crippling injury to his hands in a car accident. On a recommendation from his colleague Wong, the doctor travels to far-off Tibet to receive physical and spiritual healing from the renowned Ancient One. During this process, Strange unwittingly acquires immense power, turning him into a sorcerer. He then uses his new abilities to fight an evil villain who’s trying to take over the world.
