Shadowhunters casts Game of Thrones actor as Sebastian

Freeform recently announced the casting of a key member of Shadowhunters season 2B. British actor Will Tudor will play the role of Sebastian, a character who first appears in City of Glass, the third book in Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series.

Will Tudor comes to Shadowhunters

Though Will Tudor’s name might not be immediately recognizable to you, the 29-year-old has been making the rounds on nerd TV as of late.

One of the actor’s first major roles was Olyvar, a spy and prostitute employed by Littlefinger, in seasons three, four, and five of Games of Thrones. Judging by the books, the character Tudor will play on Shadowhunters has a dark side, much like Olyvar, and it’s unclear how much he should be trusted.

Tudor’s other nerdy role comes as Odi, a malfunctioning Synth – a.k.a. a robot for non-fans – on Humans. Clearly, he has experience playing not-quite human characters.

If you haven’t seen either of those shows or Tudor’s run on Mr. Selfridge, fear not. Showrunner Todd Slavkin told TVLine that Tudor is “so good,” “amazing,” and “mind-blowing” as Sebastian. Darren Swimmer agreed with his fellow showrunner, adding that the “vulnerability” that Tudor brings to Sebastian is “captivating.”

Who is the new Shadowhunters character, Sebastian?

If you’ve read the books, you should have a very good idea of exactly who Sebastian is, but as we know, Shadowhunters has been deviating from its source material. With that in mind, let’s take a look at what Freeform has to say about the character, and if it fits with the Sebastian we already know.

Sebastian is described as a “charming, brilliant, and highly educated Shadowhunter with unrivaled fighting abilities.” That description seems comparable to how we see Sebastian when he first arrives in City of Glass.

However, the description also points out that Sebastian comes to the New York Institute after befriending one of the Shadowhunters’s main characters. Freeform has been coy on just who that character is, but Hypable suggests it could be Alec. This would be a departure from the source material but perhaps not an egregious one.

Another small change in Sebastian’s character is the fact he hails from the London Institute rather than the one in Paris, as he does in the books. (Mortal Instruments fans will know this isn’t technically true, but let’s leave the spoilers out of it, shall we?)

Slavkin was mum on any potential spoiler-y changes to the character, but he did tell TVLine, “As we’ve done with all the episodes you’ve seen, we’ve always had our own spin on everything, and Sebastian is no different.”

Is this worrying, Shadowhunters fans? With recent events – and deaths – is the show moving too far from the books or just far enough?
