About Shiro Ychigo
Name: Shiro Ychigo aka Blanca
Occupation: High School Teacher
Location: Asturias, Spain
How did you first get into cosplay?
I had always seen cosplayers on the internet and then I went to my first con with a really cheap cosplay of Lili Rockefort from Tekken. I met a lot of people that also loved cosplay and I started to do more costumes. It was 2011.
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
I’m 26 years old and I’m already a high school teacher and I’m so happy with my work. For me, cosplay is a hobby that I really love because I can create clothes and weapons and take photos. I’m a really fortunate cosplayer because I’m sponsored by some cosplay stores and by my base fan that supports my costumes, so I can create a lot of outfits.
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them, or a hybrid?
Both, I’m a cosmodel and works with some stores so I have a lot of bought costumes, but also, I really love to create my own outfits.
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
The time I spend in my handmade costumes is insane: I really want the perfect fabrics, wig, and looks like the characters, so it took me months.
What is your favorite cosplay you have done so far?
I can’t choose one, but Ragyo Kamui (Kill la Kill) and Elsa from Frozen. I love Kill la Kill, is my favourite anime ever and Kamui’s are a challenge (I’m going to do Satsuki’s Kamui soon). With Elsa, I really identify myself with her. I really love how I look with these costumes.
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
Umm, If I had to choose one…WCS Preliminaries, I debuted my Ragyo’s costume there. It was a good and bad experience so that’s one. Also, I met my best friends and my boyfriend at cons, so this is a memorable one also.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
It can be really stressful. My friends are cosplayers also, so when we have groups we are really stressed, well, finally we use to love the costumes, but the way….haha
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I’m obsessed with Genshin Impact and I’m going to do Ninguang or Xiangling. I’m also currently buying the materials and fabrics for Satsuki Kamui. And also, as a cosmodel, I’m going to collaborate with all new KDa’s outfits with some stores.
What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
There are a lot of envious people that only want to win or to have fame and then they lie and criticize trying to have it. Those people are really toxic. I have had more than one as a friend and I’ve been so wounded.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I love a lot of characters. I love strong women, I love cutie outfits,…I have a lot of costumes haha.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photoshoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
Creating the costumes and photoshoots
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
Yes, I normally buy my fabrics at two local stores: Telas Pedro and El Revoltijo. For wigs L-email, coscraft, or aliexpress.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
The fact that I’m also a teacher, some of my students and collages do not understand why I love cosplay.
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
I used to be so shy and now I’m more extroverted.
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Enjoy cosplay, just fun, and meet new people, you can find amazing people in the cosplay world.
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
It is more universal and more professional.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
I’d like to participate in some cosplay league, like Eurocosplay or WCS.
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
No, I don’t want to cry haha.
What does cosplay mean to you?
I way to recreate my favs characters and a way of art.
How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?
I don’t know, even more, famous haha.
