Sonic Movie Poster Has Been Revealed!
A new official Sonic movie poster was posted via Instagram as a motion poster from IGN. The poster shows off a glimpse of the hedgehog’s design, which has undergone a more hyper-realistic transformation.
Sonic Movie Poster Shows the Blue Blur’s Fur, Kicks, and… Biceps?
The short clip shows off a visual (not representative of Sonic’s actual speed) of Sonic zooming as a blue laser, only to reveal the official Sonic movie poster. Although Sonic’s face and front side are obscured in much of the image, a few details really stick out.
A blue aura surrounds Sonic, which really shows off a detailed fur design. However, the typical blue spike style still looks no different than most of his cartoon and video game outings. In fact, many could say that the style has the same approach that the Detective Pikachu trailer had shown with its Pokemon designs.
Moving on to Sonic’s shoes, they are still bright red, but are more contemporary sneakers with white laces, as well as having a white bottom finish. Possible Air Jordan cross-promotion? Only time will tell.
On the other hand, Sonic’s physique is probably the most contentious change for the character’s debut on the big screen. The arms are less noodle-like and are replaced with more detail. The rest of his body looks more human-like, especially from the legs to the stomach. Sonic is either conditioning for the NBA, or has way too much definition, offset by a big, spiky head.
What’s even more jarring is that the shadow cast on the character covers up his hands. They don’t appear to have a good outline of his notable white gloves either! Plus, they look like really realistic human hands that may look off-putting to some fans.
Sonic’s New Character Design Explained
IGN was also able to speak to executive producer on the film, Tim Miller, (director of Deadpool) who gave more insight on updating the Sonic the Hedgehog designs into a more realistic look. Commenting on Sonic’s fur, Miller told IGN that it was always “Stage 1 of adapting it [Sonic] to what the real world is and what a real animal would be like.”
Among other things, IGN also had the opportunity to learn about the new shoes the hedgehog was sporting. As explained by producer Neal Moritz (best known as the producer for The Fast and the Furious franchise): “We looked at every different variation of what shoes he’s worn and we’re trying to pay homage to that and also make it current and present day in what we think a Sonic of today would wear.”
Miller also added that the eyes (not shown in the movie poster) were a huge departure from the character’s iconic design, something that SEGA was not happy about. “I don’t think SEGA was entirely happy with the eye decision, but these sorts of things you go, ‘It’s going to look weird if we don’t do this.’ But everything is a discussion, and that’s kind of the goal, which is to only change what’s necessary and stay true to the rest of it.”
Sonic the Hedgehog releases on Nov. 8, 2019, and will have Ben Schwartz voice Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, and James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, the newly appointed sheriff of Green Hills who befriends Sonic! The film will be directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel.
