Star Trek: TNG to Meet Aliens in Comic Crossover

The Star Trek Crew to Find New Life

According to Bleeding Cool, Dirk Wood of IDW and Matt Parkinson of Dark Horse announced at MCM London Comic Con that a new crossover series that will launch in April of next year. Subtitled “Acceptable Losses,” the Star Trek: The Next Generation and Aliens crossover will prove that there are things scarier than the Borg lurking in the darkness.

“Acceptable Losses” will be written by Scott and David Tipton, with art by J.K. Woodward. This is not the first time the trio has banded together for cross-franchise Trek adventures. They previously collaborated on IDW’s 2012 mini-series Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimiliation2.

Star Trek TNG castNext year also brings with it a brand-new series for Trekkies, with the debut of Star Trek: Discovery. While the show was originally going to premiere in January, it was recently pushed to May. Additionally, Hannibal’s Bryan Fuller will no longer be acting as showrunner, but still promises to remain “actively involved” as an executive producer.

Prior Encounters With New Civilizations

As their previous crossover suggests, “Acceptable Losses” is just the latest in a number of comic book series mixing Trek with other science fiction franchises. In recent years, IDW—the current holder of the Trek comic book rights—has teamed with DC Entertainment for both a Legion of Super-Heroes crossover and two separate Green Lantern crossovers. IDW also paired with Boom! Studios for a Planet of the Apes crossover in 2014–15.

The implementation of Trek crossovers is nothing new. In 1996, Marvel published Star Trek/X-Men, a comic book crossover that was followed by two sequels: a comic book titled Second Contact and a prose novel titled Planet X. However, these, along with Legion of Superheroes publication, were not intercompany crossovers. IDW has truly taken the next step into the final frontier.

The Star Trek: The Next Generation/Aliens, subtitled “Acceptable Losses,” will launch in April 2017.
