Star Wars fans new and old we are truly at the final countdown. The first teaser for Star Wars: Episode IX has just dropped and it’s incredible. Not to mention we now have the title drop as well! I’m still a bit of an emotional wreck but I will try to do it justice.
Lucasfilm released the teaser during Star Wars Celebration in Chicago. The full title is Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker, let that sink in for a minute. Are you still with us? Good.
The Rise of Skywalker
Star Wars fans are still a little torn in the aftermath of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, especially in regards to Luke Skywalker, which we wrote about here. But I think we can all agree this teaser is an emotional ride. We get an emotional voiceover from Luke Skywalker, the return of fan favorite Lando Calrissian, Leia’s theme in the background and of course Carrie Fisher.
We tragically lost Carrie Fisher back in 2016 so seeing her as General Leia Organa? It is too emotional for words. As in had to pause the trailer to cry for a minute before being able to continue. I can only speak for myself but this teaser makes me excited over Star Wars again.
There is so much to unpack in it. This teaser highlights, via Luke Skywalker’s voiceover, the fact that this is Rey’s fight. This is her journey. Speaking of Rey, she has what looks like a white lightsaber.
Fans of Star Wars Rebels will know that according to Wookiepedia, Dave Filoni said white lightsabers mean there’s no affiliation to the Sith or the Jedi. Which poses a very interesting fact about Rey herself.
It’s hard not to get emotional as you see Leia and Rey hugging as Luke says “We will always be with you” or see Billy Dee William’s Lando Calrissian piloting the Millenium Falcon. There’s both a hint of nostalgia and excitement for what’s to come ahead.
With an undertone of bittersweet as the teaser highlights that this is the end of the saga. It is probably the last time we’ll see these characters who were such an important part of our lives.
One of the best shots in the teaser is the last shot of Rey, Poe Dameron, Finn, Chewbacca, C3PO, and another droid. This is a team up we’re really excited about. We get Luke’s voiceover saying “No one is ever really gone” and then bam! Palpatine’s laugh.
That’s right! Ian McDiarmid’s Emperor Palpatine is back. Things are going to get interesting.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters this December.
