Syfy’s Best Shows

5 of Syfy’s Best Shows

The Syfy channel has put out great shows for nerds. Sure, there’s science fiction, but there are also fantasy, supernatural, and even competition shows. Here are five of Syfy’s best shows.

Cosplay Melee

Cosplay Melee is the ultimate competition/reality show for nerds. It’s a cosplay contest show hosted by Yvette Nicole Brown and judged by Brown, world-class cosplayer Leeana Vamp, and Hollywood costumer Christian Beckman. The goal is to create an original character with a complete costume that relates to the episode’s theme. Themes include Space Opera (space-related franchise), Throne Off (Game of Thrones inspired costumes), and Angels and Demons. The game works in two rounds. In the first round, four contestants must create an accessory for their character, be it a helmet, a weapon, or wings. They have eight hours to make it. Then they must present the accessory to the judges. After this round, the judges eliminate one competitor. In the next round, the remaining three must complete their costumes and incorporate their accessory in 48 hours. Then they present their completed character to the judges on a runway. The winner receives $10,000. Honestly, I never really thought of cosplay as something very difficult until I watched this show. I have so much respect for people who put so much time and energy into cosplay because so many of them feel that is where they belong.

Wynonna Earp

Wynonna Earp is about the great-great-granddaughter of Wyatt Earp, the legendary lawman, and is based on the comic book series by Beau Smith. With Wyatt’s revolver, Peacemaker, Wynonna sends revenants – the outlaws Wyatt killed, reincarnated – back to Hell. She joins up with the Black Badge Division, which eventually includes an immortal Doc Holliday and Waverly Earp, Wynonna’s younger sister. Doc Holliday’s life was spared by a witch, who cured his tuberculosis and gave him endless life. It all takes place in Purgatory, Wynonna’s hometown. The special thing about this series is that it is mostly led by women. Wynonna and her sister have a strong friendship. And Waverly is a lesbian, whose girlfriend also assists with the pursuit of revenants. Wynonna also works with Special Agent Xavier Dolls, a black man who leads the BBD. It has diverse main characters who play their parts very well. With an exciting combination of supernatural and western genres, great actors, and a compelling plot, this show is deservedly popular. Season three will be wrapping up filming in May.

Being Human

Being Human is an older show from Syfy that ended in 2014 and was based on the BBC show of the same name. It follows three roommates – a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost, living in Boston. With mysterious forces surrounding them that keep them from living normal lives, the characters attempt to maintain their humanity. The show ran for four successful seasons, and an unprecedented number of women for a Syfy show watched it. This show might sound a little crazy, but it has the audience hooked right away. The pilot is riveting from the start, without any obvious exposition. It all flows naturally, and we capture the backstory of the characters quickly. The cast portrays their struggles and stories excellently. This show is a must-see for fans of Supernatural and the like.

Face Off

Face Off is another competition show that has been running on Syfy for thirteen seasons. It involves contestants creating creatures of science fiction and horror with makeup. Where Cosplay Melee has new contestants every episode, Face Off runs more like America’s Next Top Model style, running for a few weeks with contestants eliminated each week, depending on their performance in an initial challenge and then the spotlight challenge. The winner receives $100,000. The judges have changed throughout the seasons, but are always comprised of professionals in the movie industry. McKenzie Westmore, a member of the famous family within the Hollywood makeup artist industry, hosts. It is really a cool show to watch if you’re into this side of filmmaking. For me, it reminds me that in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson wanted the orcs created out of makeup instead of CGI, and it looked fantastic.

Battlestar Galactica

I feel like I can’t talk about Syfy shows without talking about Battlestar Galactica. Whether you’re a fan of the show or just remember the iconic “Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica,” line from The Office, you’ve heard of this staple of not just the Syfy channel, but science fiction as a genre. The show aired on Syfy in 2004 and ran through 2009. It was a re-imagining of the 70s series created by Glen A. Larson. It is about a number of humans, after being nearly annihilated within their twelve colonies, search for Earth, the legendary thirteenth colony. The show earned wide praises for pushing political boundaries through allegory, shaping multifaceted characters, and creating an overall standard for science fiction on television. This was reflected in the award nominations and wins the show earned. It was met with criticism from fans and cast members of the original show, but overall it was successful in its four-season run. It’s a foundation for TV science fiction.
