Evolution – The Video Game*
*My personal Kickstarter Backing Pick for October 2017
Can you adapt to the changing environment or will your species go extinct? The award-winning Evolution is coming to PC, Mac and mobile.
Evolution, by North Star Games, is an award-winning board game about adapting to the changing environment. Your species rely on food from the watering hole to survive. Want to eat the plant food before your opponents get the chance? Add the Foraging trait to eat food twice as fast. Think a Carnivore is lurking? Evolve with Climbing and escape to the trees, or better yet, evolve your species into a Carnivore and make a meal of your opponents.
With a deck of beautiful watercolor trait cards from internationally renowned nature artist Catherine Hamilton, the endless combinations turn every game into a thrilling adventure.
As an Environmental Scientist myself, and having heard rave reviews about the board game, this backing was an easy pick. I am a fan of board gaming apps, passing my spare time playing several different adaptations on my iPad when I don’t have a gaming partner to play the tangible game. A mere $4 pledge gives access to the Beta version of the game on iOS or Android (Tablets in Nov 2017, Phones in Feb 2018), and then the official release of Evolution the Video Game on iOS or Android in Spring 2018. I would easily drop $4 on the video game in the spring, so why not back it now and get early access to the Beta? Sign me up!

STEM: Epic Heroes
The object of the game is to score the face-up Discovery Cards from the Field. Players use Heroes to make discoveries, enhance your score with items and locations, and use inspiration cards to accelerate your progress and disrupt your opponents. Core mechanics are based on a competitive set collection with some take that elements.
When a player has scored all 5 steps of the Scientific Method, the round’s end is triggered and play continues until it reaches the player who went first. Then all players calculate their points and resolve any hero abilities that directly affect scoring. The player with the highest score wins. If there is a tie, the player with the fewest played cards wins.

Forest of Fate
Forest of Fate takes the Choose Your Own Adventure format and transforms it into a tabletop game for 2-6 adventurers, from non-gamers to experienced role-players alike. Tension and story build hand-in-hand over 30-60 minutes as you decide how to approach each encounter, with strategy, negotiation and over 40,000 words of original narrative.
2-6 adventurers use teamwork and tough decisions to find your fate and make it home with the tale of a lifetime.
Creator Phil Hazelton says this about the game:
I was inspired to create Forest of Fate by the gamebooks of my childhood, the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkein and Terry Pratchett, and the amazing and varied scenery near my home on the South West coast of England. My goal was to make roleplaying games more accessible by stripping back almost all the conventional elements, revealing a strong procedural storytelling experience that is:
- Easy to grasp and “safe” for new players
- Self-contained, and quick to play
- Endlessly replayable
I hope I’ve succeeded!
As a storytelling survival adventure, Forest of Fate uses nothing but a storybook and high-quality cards for its unique brand of survival storytelling. It’s compact enough to take anywhere, and has no small parts to lose! The Story Book is the heart and soul of Forest of Fate. It contains 1,164 paragraphs to spark your imagination, describing the encounters you’ll face and the actions you’ll take. When pledging this campaign, you have three choices when it comes to using the Story Book: Deluxe edition, digital edition, and PDF edition. This provides for portable storytelling adventures based on your every need.
