Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie in the Works At Netflix

Netflix is Producing a New TMNT Movie

Netflix is beginning to produce a new animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie in a collaboration with Nickelodeon Studios. The movie is based on the Nickelodeon show, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. A second movie will follow it, which is based on the other Nick show, The Loud House

They announced the deal Tuesday, during Viacom’s quarterly earnings call. Nickelodeon has faced a difficult quarter when it is usually a high earner for Viacom. Viacom CEO Bob Bakish said this movie was intended to grow Nickelodeon’s reach.

“We do see the light at the end of the tunnel starting to appear,” he said.

Not The First Time

This collaboration is not the first between the two companies. Nick produces Pinky Malinky for Netflix, and they recently announced a partnership on a live-action Avatar: the Last Airbender series. Avatar was a hit Nickelodeon cartoon, and hopefully, this new production will be just as successful.

The Nick series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles puts a new spin on the characters we know and love. The turtles have new designs, new dynamics, and new enemies. Raphael takes on the leadership role instead of Leonardo. Also, instead of Shredder and the Foot Clan, the Turtles are facing the Yokai of Baron Draxom, the ruler of “The Hidden City,” a mystical part of New York. This looks like what we will see in the Netflix film.

The franchise has six feature films. The first three were released in the 90s, the height of its popularity, which it gained from the animated series. The first film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, came out in 1990. It had two sequels: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze in 1991, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III in 1993. In 2007, they got their first animated feature film, TMNT. In 2014, the live-action series was rebooted with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows followed shortly after in 2016.

In addition to those six, there was a made-for-TV animated film, Turtles Forever, which brought together the cast of the 2003 series and the cast of the 1987 animated series, which was based on the original comic book.

So, who’s excited to see the Turtles return?
