The 31 SCARIEST Halloween Horror Movies Pt. 2

Feeling brave? Are you ready for more terrifying punishment? Good! It’s time for Word of the Nerd‘s 31 SCARIEST Halloween Horror Movies Pt. 2! Be prepared for another week of sleepless nights and nightmare-riddled dreams. Viewers, beware, you WILL be scared.

24. Shutter Island

31 Scariest Halloween Horror moviesFrom the moment when U.S. Marshals Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule arrive at Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, they know right away something’s off about the place. Why are the doctors and staff so uncooperative? Why do all of the patients seem to be afraid? As the pair investigate the whereabouts of a missing staff member, Teddy’s paranoia begins to mount. There’s something wrong with Shutter Island, something that feels terrifyingly familiar.

Scare Factor: 2/5

Best Quote: “You know, this place makes me wonder—what would be worse? To live as a monster, or to die as a good man?”

23. House on Haunted Hill (1999)

31 Scariest Halloween Horror moviesAnother remake of a horror classic, House on Haunted Hill was one of the last truly scary films of the decade. The premise is tantalizing in its simplicity: a group of strangers each receives a party invitation, promising them 1 million dollars. The only catch is they have to spend the entire night in a haunted house. As the night rolls on, the house’s terrifying past is brought to the surface. What began as a sick game, spurred on by an eccentric millionaire, quickly becomes a fight for their lives—and souls.

Scare Factor: 2/5

Best Quote: “Sure is a funky old house, ain’t it?”

22. 1408

31 Scariest Halloween Horror moviesStephen King is the literary master of modern horror and the film based on the author’s spine-tingling short story pulls no punches. Mike Enslin is a jaded author and investigator of the supernatural. After receiving a postcard from the Dolphin Hotel with the written warning “do not enter room 1408“, Enslin is captivated. He books the room, against the warnings of the hotel staff, and settles in for the night. Not long after, strange events begin to take place inside the room. Mike can’t stop it, he can’t control it, and he can’t leave.

Scare Factor: 3/5

Best Quote: “No, you misunderstand. Whatever’s in 1408 is nothing like that; it’s an evil fucking room.”

21. I Know What You Did Last Summer

31 Scariest Halloween Horror moviesVery few horror films have been as lasting and as culturally impactful as the renowned post-modern slasher flick I Know What You Did Last SummerThe story revolves around four friends who mistakenly hit and kill a stranger on the side of the road with their car. Fearing the consequences, they vow to dump the body in the river, never to speak of what took place to anyone ever again. One year later, however, the group begins to receive threatening letters warning them that someone else was there. Someone knows. Can the group work together to solve the mystery or will they end up on the wrong end of a fisherman’s hook?

Scare Factor: 3/5

Best Quote:Let’s just pretend he’s some escaped lunatic with a hook for a hand and we’re doing everyone a favor.”

20. Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later

31 Scariest Halloween Horror moviesThis was a difficult choice, mainly because there are about a dozen Halloween movies to choose from. I chose Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later for a number of different reasons. For one, it’s easily the scariest and most suspenseful in the franchise, aside from the original. Second, it has arguably the best plot AND this was the first time Jamie Lee Curtis reprised her role as Laurie Strode. Set twenty years after the bloody murders of the first and second installments, Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later follows an adult Laurie, now headmistress at Hillcrest Boarding School. Attempting to cope with life after her traumatic teen years and after having successfully faked her own death, Laurie is cautiously optimistic that her nightmare may finally be over. Sadly, her brother Michael has other plans in store for their family reunion.

Scare Factor: 3/5

Best Quote:I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up. Because I realized that what was living behind that boy’s eyes was purely and simply…evil.”

19. It Follows

31 Scariest Halloween Horror moviesA cautionary metaphorical tale about the dangers of pre-marital sex, It Follows is one of the most inventive and original horror stories of the ’00s. Teenager Jay thinks she’s in love with her new boyfriend, Hugh. After sleeping together for the first time, Jay awakes naked and chained to a chair. Hugh informs her that she now carries a curse, one which can only be passed through sexual intercourse. Wherever she goes, death’s phantom will follow her until it captures her soul. The only way to break the curse is to pass on it to someone else.

Scare Factor: 3/5

Best Quote:It could look like someone you know or it could be a stranger in a crowd. Whatever helps it get close to you.”

18. Oculus

31 Scariest Halloween Horror moviesA truly chilling tale of psychological Halloween horror, Oculus is a film designed to push the boundaries of perception and sanity. Tim has just spent the last ten years in a mental hospital, repressing the memories of supernatural events that killed his parents. Upon his release, his sister Kaylie is there to greet him and take him home. The two revisit memories of their past and the cursed mirror that Kaylie believes is the true culprit in their parents’ demise. In an attempt to clear her brother and father of their crimes, Kaylie has constructed a dangerous and elaborate plan to confront the spirits trapped inside the mirror. But when you can’t trust your own eyes, how do you tell what’s real and what’s imaginary?

Scare Factor: 4/5

Best Quote: “Hello again, you must be hungry.”
