The 31 SCARIEST Halloween Horror Movies Pt. 3

Halloween is just around the corner, which means that it’s now time for the third installment of Word of the Nerd‘s 31 SCARIEST Halloween Horror Movies. As we creep closer to the top spot, ask yourself this one simple question: “Am I brave enough?”

17. Poltergeist (1982)

poltergeist (1982) 31 Scariest Halloween Horror Movies

Some people will argue that “classic” Halloween horror movies aren’t scary by today’s standards. To those select few, I say you don’t understand the true concept or motif of the Horror genre. It’s about creating an atmosphere, about building suspense. It is NOT blood, guts, and gore—not exclusively at least. Poltergeist tells the story of the fictional Freeling Family and their violent haunting experience. What makes this film even scarier is that the production is believed to have been cursed after four cast members died before the conclusion of the original trilogy—including Heather O’Rourke. The twelve-year-old child star succumbed to septic shock and died suddenly and unexpectedly on the operating table.

Scare Factor: 3/5

Best Quote: “They’re heeeeere…”

16. Jaws

31 Scariest Halloween Horror Movies - JawsNo, Jaws is not your standard or typical Halloween horror movie. There are no ghosties or ghoulies running amuck, but this film is still, to this day, responsible for creating mass selachophobia around the world. As the 4th of July fast approaches on Amity Island, the townsfolk are terrorized by a massive great white shark. Steven Speilberg’s masterpiece is still, to this day, one of the most suspenseful movies of all time, with one of the most truly terrifying and recognizable scores. Jaws will make you think twice about going back in the water, ever again.

Scare Factor: 3/5

Best Quote: “The thing about a shark, he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes—like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at you, he doesn’t seem to be living…until he bites you.”

15. We Are What We Are

31 Scariest Halloween Horror MoviesOnce in a generation, a film comes along that is so disturbing, so truly upsetting, that it terrifies the masses solely through word of mouth. It shocks audiences before they even have a chance to see it, leaving only a brave select few left in the theatre audience. This is precisely the reason why We Are What We Are remains absent from the majority of horror lists—because people are simply too afraid to even watch it. When the matriarch of the Parker family dies unexpectedly and suddenly, daughters Rose and Iris are called upon to fulfill her religious duties. As mass flooding hits the region, the Parker family’s ancient traditions and customs begin to float to the surface.

Scare Factor: 3/5

Best Quote: “I don’t know what you think you heard but you must be mistaken.”

14. The Babadook

31 Scariest Halloween Horror MoviesOne of the most critically acclaimed horror films in the past five years, The Babadook is an incredibly haunting psychological allegory of grief and terror. When Amelia Vanek’s son Sam brings her an eerie pop-up book to read to him as a bedtime story, it terrifies both mother and son. Soon after, strange events begin happening around the house. Is it Sam’s imagination running away from him? Is Amelia losing her mind? Or could it be that the Babadook is actually real?

Scare Factor: 4/5

Best Quote: If it’s in a word or it’s in a look—you can’t get rid of the Babadook…”

13. Saw

31 Scariest Halloween Horror MoviesThe film responsible for breathing renewed fire into the slasher genre; Saw was the most widely talked-about horror film of the decade. Freelance photographer Adam and physician Lawrence Gordon awake with chains on their feet, tied to a bathroom floor, with a corpse lying between them. Lawrence is instructed to kill Adam by six o’clock otherwise his family will die. Without realizing, the two have become unwilling participants in a sick game of cat and mouse orchestrated by none other than the infamous Jigsaw killer. If they don’t work together to uncover the clues to their escape, the bathroom door will shut permanently, locking them both away forever.

Scare Factor: 4/5

Best Quote: “Live or die; make your choice.”

12. Dead Silence

Dead Silence (2007) 31 Scariest Halloween Horror MoviesThere’s something about nursery rhymes in horror films that are just truly terrifying. From the creative team behind Saw comes the story of Dead Silence and Mary Shaw, a ventriloquist who lost her voice. When a child goes missing in her small town of Raven’s Fair, the townspeople hold Shaw responsible. They come to her house, kill her, and cut out her tongue in the night. Centuries later, Shaw returns to exact revenge on the people of Raven’s Fair by killing only those who scream in her presence. Dead Silence is easily the most terrifying “doll” film since Child’s Play and would later come to serve as the inspiration for James Wan’s Annabelle

Scare Factor: 4/5

Best Quote: “Beware the stare of Mary Shaw; she had no children, only dolls. And if you see her in your dreams, be sure you never, ever scream.”

11. The Strangers

As the great Billy Loomis once said: “It’s a lot scarier when there is no motive.” This is, part and parcel, why The Strangers is such a memorable and chilling film. There is no motive, no reasoning, and no explanation. Quite simply, James Hoyt and Kristen McCay could have been anyone; they just had the misfortune of being home when The Strangers came knocking. It’s suspenseful and frightening in the most primal way and it will make you think twice about ever answering the front door again.

Scare Factor: 4/5

Best Quote: “Because you were home.”
