Actor Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) has been added to the cast of Daredevil season 2, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Bernthal will be playing Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, in the upcoming season. While it’s unclear if the Punisher will serve a more protagonist or antagonistic role in the series remains to be seen.
The Punisher has long been one of the most iconic anti-heroes (or anti-villains, depending who you ask) in popular culture. Known for being one of the few heroes that actually kills his enemies, many other heroes have often found themselves at odds with Frank Castle. It will be interesting to see how his personality, as well as his interactions with Matt Murdock, are captured in season 2.
It’s worth noting that many Agents of SHIELD fans have speculated that Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) would become the Punisher at some point in the series, the same way Skye (Chloe Bennet) was revealed to be Daisy Johnson. With this casting news revealed, it now means that Grant Ward is out of the running for the title. There are, however many other canon 616 characters that he may turn out to be.
It has not yet been announced if Bernthal will be a series regular or a recurring character. Coupled with the fact that Bullseye and Elektra are both being considered for Daredevil season 2, it seems as though Marvel is really going to be loading up the hero factor with the show’s second season. While a larger cast may be interesting for the show, comics-based shows have shown time and time again that their writers rarely know how to juggle a larger ensemble cast.
Given the skill of the Daredevil writers, it will be exciting to see what happens in season 2, and what new characters are worked into the show. Though I don’t often say this about comics TV, I have faith in Daredevil to deliver another brilliant season.
