Donny Cates and Tradd Moore Take the Silver Surfer for a Ride This Summer
Just in time for summer vacation, the Silver Surfer is back on his board in his own mini-series in June! The man, the myth, the legend Donny Cates (God Country, Venom, Thanos) and the always visually-stunning Tradd Moore (Luther Strode, All-New Ghost Rider) take the silver surfboard for a ride around the galaxy. The mini-series from Marvel Comics will be titled Silver Surfer: Black and will arrive June of this year.
This news has me personally extremely hyped up. I am a big Donny Cates fan. I absolutely adored God Country and his run on Thanos; the “Thanos Wins” storyline was absolutely incredible. That’s not adding in the fantastic work he is currently doing on Venom and Guardians of the Galaxy. Then you add in an artist like Tradd Moore, whose visual style is like nothing else on the shelves. Then Marvel has a recipe for success.
As Geek Tyrant notes, the last place we saw the Silver Surfer was in Donny Cates first issue of Guardians of the Galaxy. He was whisked away in a wormhole with many other Marvel Cosmic characters. From the Geek Tyrant article, editor Darren Shan shines some light on what we can expect.
“When Donny Cates wrote the first issue of the new GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY series, we both agreed that Silver Surfer’s adventure wasn’t going to end there, that there was still more story to be told about what happened to all the cosmic heroes that got sucked into the Black Order’s wormhole. But Donny’s imagination really kicked into gear when artist Tradd Moore signed on! Readers won’t realize it, but SILVER SURFER: BLACK is a culmination of everything Donny has been writing since his THANOS run. And Tradd Moore is delivering some of the craziest visuals seen in a Marvel Comic today!”
Just thinking about what Cates and Moore are going to do with the Silver Surfer gives me goosebumps. Cates does a great job of telling these grandiose type stories yet still feeling very small and intimate as well. He also does a great job with more comedic things as well, as seen with his Cosmic Ghost Rider character. It will be interesting to see what he does with Norrin Radd. The cosmic side of Marvel also lets Tradd Moore off the chain with what we can expect visually from him. His art is very stylized and wild anyways, but now that we are in the far reaches of space, who knows what he will come up with!
