The Top 10 SCARIEST Halloween Horror Movies

It’s here—it’s finally here! Halloween is upon us and that means that it’s finally time for Word of the Nerd‘s Top 10 SCARIEST Halloween Horror Movies! For those of you who have been following along, get ready for our most terrifying list yet! Don’t answer the phone, don’t answer the door, and whatever you do—don’t fall asleep.

10. What Lies Beneath

31 Scariest Halloween horror moviesI’m going to come right out and say it: Michelle Pfeiffer is one of the greatest actresses of our generation.  There’s something about her eyes, her innate ability to convey emotion through them that make What Lies Beneath one of the most chilling ghost stories of all time. Set in a beautiful lakeside Vermont town, Claire begins hearing voices and noticing strange occurrences happening around her home. Her husband, Norman, growing ever more concerned suggests that she see a therapist. Is Claire losing her mind or could it be that there’s something or someone trying to make contact with her?

Best Quote: “I think she’s starting to suspect something…”

9. The Sixth Sense

31 scariest halloween horror moviesI don’t care who you are or how good your horror movie intuition may be; there is no way you saw that ending coming. The Sixth Sense is the refreshingly frightful film that took director M. Night Shyamalan from relative obscurity and thrust him to the forefront of mainstream cinema. Malcolm Crowe is a child psychologist haunted by the one patient whom he was unable to help. Years later, when he encounters another child with the same strange ailment, Crowe vowes to do everything in his power to save the child from his terrifying visions.

8. Scream

31 scariest halloween horror moviesI still get nightmares about the opening scene in ScreamIt pains me to think about the many young horror buffs who will never understand or comprehend the sheer terror of hearing the “home phone” ringing with no idea as to who might be on the line—or where the call is coming from. Scream is Wes Craven’s ode to the horror genre. A group of teens is being stalked by a masked “ghost face” assailant who’s seen one too many horror films. He wants to play a little game…and see what their insides look like. This is, hands-down, my favorite Halloween horror film of all time.

Scare Factor: 4/5

Best Quote: “What’s your favorite scary movie?”

7. Stir of Echoes

31 scariest halloween horror moviesIf you were making a recipe for a great horror film, what would it consist of? Well, if you’re a fan of disturbing visuals, hair-raising suspense, and creepy kids, Stir of Echoes is the film for you. After being hypnotized by his sister-in-law at a party, Tom can’t stop the onslaught of violent images bombarding his mind. Images of a girl…and her ghost. The more he ignores her, the stronger she becomes. As Tom digs deeper beneath the surface, he’s confronted with the terrifying truth. A truth that threatens the lives of his entire family.

Best Quote: “Does it hurt to be dead?”

6. Paranormal Activity

31 scariest halloween horror moviesPerhaps the greatest “found footage” horror movie of all time, Paranormal Activity brings new meaning to the word “suspense”. After moving into their new suburban home, Kate and Micah begin noticing strange disturbances around their house. Little things at first: noises in the night, items out of place. But as these events become more and more pronounced, Katie becomes fearful that it may be more than happenstance. She feels something evil is stalking her, something demonic. It doesn’t just want to communicate—it wants to hurt her.

Scare Factor: 4/5

Best Quote: “You cannot run from this—it will follow you. It may lay dormant for years. Something may trigger it to become more active and it may, over time, reach out to communicate with you.”

5. Hereditary

31 scariest halloween horror moviesFew horror movies have garnered more hype than Hereditary. It was promoted as “a horror masterpiece” as well as “this generation’s The Exorcist. I suppose time will tell, but what I can say without question is that it’s the best Halloween horror film to be released in the last decade. Hereditary is such a mind-bending “what the f***?” kind of movie, that I can’t even begin to attempt a proper synopsis. It’s Rosemary’s Baby meets Suspiria. If my previous lists have alotted me even a modicum of trust from you, dear reader—then just watch it.

Scare Factor: 4/5

Best Quote: “Cluck.”

4. Sinister

31 scariest halloween horror moviesSo many horror movies blow it with the ending. Sinister is one of those rare films that keep you guessing the whole way through and doesn’t ruin it with some cheap, rushed, shoddy conclusion that makes absolutely no sense. True-crime writer Ellison Oswalt will do anything to kickstart his once-great writing career—even if it means moving his family into a murder home. When Ellison discovers an old box of super 8 “snuff films”, he becomes obsessed with discovering the killer’s secret. Who made these films? Why did the families have to die? And just who is the strange figure on the screen?

Scare Factor: 5/5

Best Quote: “Don’t worry, daddy. I’ll make you famous again.”

3. Insidious

31 scariest halloween horror moviesVery few movies give me goosebumps by just thinking about them; Insidious is the exception that proves the rule. James Wan understands, perhaps better than any, what truly scares people. It’s about taking something simple, unassuming, and bringing out the terror element that lies within. Insidious tells the story of the Lambert family and their son, Dalton. After he inexplicably slips into a coma, doctors cannot determine why Dalton won’t wake. When strange events begin happening in the night, the family reaches out to a spirit medium for help. What she reveals is something more sinister, more insidious than the family could have ever imagined.

Scare Factor: 5/5

Best Quote: “It’s not the house that is haunted, it’s your son.”

2. The Conjuring

31 scariest halloween horror moviesThe music box. Hide & Clap. Anabelle—The Conjuring is beyond terrifying. But what really drives the fear factor home is four simple words: based on true events. Inspired by the “true” recountings of paranormal “experts” Ed & Lorraine Warren, The Conjuring tells the “true” story of the Perron family. When haunting disturbances begin taking place in their new Rhode Island home, the Perrons can’t get anyone to believe them. In a desperate state, the family reaches out to the church to save their home and their souls.

1. The Ring

31 scariest halloween horror moviesNo movie is as terrifying as The RingWhen I first saw this film in theatres, I didn’t sleep for a week. I kept the TV on for over a month. It’s chilling in every sense of the word and still to this day, nearly twenty years after its initial release, remains highly cemented as the scariest Halloween horror movie I’ve ever seen in my entire life. When investigative reporter Rachel hears the urban legend about the VHS tape that supposedly kills you exactly one week after watching it, she doesn’t pay it any mind. She’s even bold enough to watch it herself. Soon after, strange things begin to take place and suddenly, Rachel isn’t so sure. When her estranged son Aidan mistakenly watches the tape, Rachel must race against time to save her son and herself.

Scare Factor: 5/5

Best Quote: “Don’t you understand, Rachel? She never sleeps…”
